  1. Seph, I know that this is not the case. I had a previous JW Avon, which I actually bought off this site - through the auction. When it arrived the butt section was broken, looked like someone had stood on the tube ( Post Office, I guess ) I wrote directly to Masterline and asked for a replacement. At the time they were bringing out the new 11 / 13 JW Avon. They said they would only deal with a tackle shop. So I got the local shop to order one, three months later they said they couldn't do one - but in fairness replaced it with one of the new 11 /13 models. Naturally I was pleased ! One thing about the new model, is that the screw reel seat doesn't fit my 'pin. I bought one of the old ones at a boot sale ( this does not have the screw reel seat ) and this is the one that I've broken the top on. I'm confident it will be OK with a replacement tip ring. Thanks everyone.
  2. I'm happy to fit a new eye and forsake the 4" ( God only knows what that sounds like to a non-angler !! ) Went to a local shop and was amazed when the young guy there showed me two options: 1 - A new eye that fitted like a d*ck in a shirt sleeve. 2 - A tiny one that he tried to push inside the hollow section !! Needless to say I took the rod and headed for the door. Just had an e-mail from a guy that will send me 3 for £4, sounds OK to me, don't fancy driving through the rush hour traffic to the next shop.
  3. Budgie - it's the Avon top. Seph - Masterline no longer make this one - they have replaced it weith the new "JW avon"
  4. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
  5. It is only right and proper that we protect and care for the poorest people. It is right that we take care of people who for various reasons cannot take care of themselves. ( if that sounds patronising - I'm sorry - not intentional, just not sure how to make a gneral comment, but I think we all understand ) What's not right is the element of people who use the welfare state as their God given right and their intended only income.Going back to Yoxer's opening comment, which we probably all recognise as true - should this really be acceptable ?
  6. I don't think it matters who you vote for, regarding tax in it's many guises - fact remains that this country needs this amount of revenue. Could have a little to do with Yoxers comments re: the state keeping the mother of 6, etc. ???
  7. Thanks argyll, pretty much what I thought. What about the ring spacing ? the next eye back will be very close to the tip ring. I tend to only use this rod for touch legering, rolling meat, etc.
  8. Not sure how it happened, but when I got back from fishing today, I found that the top 4" of my JW avon had snapped. Question is should I just replace the tip eye and not worry about the missing 4" ( araldite a new one on ) and not bother about the next eye, which is now just 3" from the top ? Any negative effects ? Appreciate some advise. thanks.
  9. Yes, Been to the Royalty. Fishing is hard at present, drop in temp, strong winds and the river is still low and clear. On the plus side had an 8.4 barbel at about 7pm. http://www.go-fishing.org/upload/files/IMG_0813[1]
  10. Gobio........Contraception.....taking resposibility for your actions - these are the relevant points surely ???
  11. Generalisation of people and groups is inevitable - human nature ensures this. Certainly there will be many specific cases that break the mould. Fact remains that there are a group of people in this country who accept state benefits as the norm, and their right. Equally there is no ambition to rise above this. So here's the problem - what's the answer ?
  12. So what's the answer ? No work - No pay - No more tw*ts like this ? Other countries adopt these attitudes, why not Britain ? No wonder they're trying every method to get here !! Too simplistic a view ? if so what's the answer ?
  13. Ebay have now stopped users adding the 2 - 5% surcharge they did in the past. That said some people still make the "please add... if paying by Paypal" statement to their advert wording. Good point about the cheques bouncing scenario Matthew. pretty scary really, if people send you a cheque then they expect their goods sent after 5 days - but the truth is the cheque could bounce way after this. Leaving you with no money and a bank charge to boot !!
  14. Chris, I probably put the full stop in the wrong place ! What I mean is I was chubbing when I caught the " big six" Agree entirely about the roving approach, but when you find a shoal it's usually a fair size.
  15. Thanks newt - so now stewart has posted twice more so all his posts quote 138 ?
  16. How come Stewart's post count is 136 on every one ?
  17. Lyn, Would love to be there - but I am doubtful. Can I leave it nearer the time before commiting ?
  18. Trotting with a bulk shotted Avon, feeding either maggots or sweetcorn. Find the holes in the river bed and you've found the Grayling. They shoal up in the winter. Last winter, one of my best bags came when chubbing. Using a ledgered piece of breadflake ( size 8 hook )right on the edge of a slack. Had 6 grayling all over 2lb in less than an hour. I would suggest the Itchen has to be one of the best grayling rivers in the country.
  19. Rudd - I'm also inclined to think your comments are tainted by the "Green eyed Monster" - not regarding the capture, but more to do with the syndicates and big names that fish these parts of the Ouse ??
  20. I think my feelings are summed up in the posts by JonHedges and Peter Waller. Completely at odds with Rudd's comments though. Rudd, you make it sound like the banks of the Ouse are lined with anglers shoulder to shoulder 24 / 7 and the fish in desperation has thrown itself on the bait. My knowledge of this river ( Not based on experience I must add ) is that this is an unique environment in that certain fish reach huge proportions - but it is a very tough stretch of water, that requires huge dedication. Congrats to Tony - and I look forward to hearing about the details of the capture.
  21. Amen Lyn - deepest commiserations
  22. Thanks Ratchet for telling us about the instance of people removing carp for the pot. Although not supported by press coverage - it shouldn't make it any the less true. One we need to be aware of. Just why your comments were rubbished by others - God knows.
  23. Was it a full moon or something last night - I've reviewed some of the posts this morning and everyone seems to be battling with everyone else! What's so bad about a pike fish in ? It's not promoted as a match - is it ? More an opportunity for like minded people to get together and fish for pike. Opportunity for the more experienced to pass on tips and hints with regard to pike welfare even. I don't remember seeing such negative remarks when Stoney and Friends offered exactly the same. Please explain why JP's attempts are so wrong ? [ 02. October 2004, 07:51 AM: Message edited by: darrell.cook ]
  24. Some Nice pics there Newt. I noticed that the Carp Anglers Group Goals are: Gain acceptance of the carp as an exciting and challenging sportfish. Become better carp anglers, assist others and encourage them to join us. Treat the carp with respect. Promote the release of trophy-size carp. Encourage others to do the same. Most of all: go fishing, share with others, and have fun! Can I ask - why they state " promote the release of trophy size carp " ? does this mean that smaller carp are removed / killed ? If so why ? Also - very noticable the absence of an unhooking mat in one of the pics - the one where they're laid on gravel - what's the general attitude towards mats, fish welfare etc. ?
