  1. Check this out:- rod I'm very impressed with mine and and this price you can afford the Epix Pro too if you shop around (a highly recommended reel. Simply superb clutch; tough and reliable). Dave
  2. Shimano Beastmaster Classic. 1.5lb Avon top and a quiver section with two push in tips. Lovely progressive action and a sensible length handle (not too long). £60 at Climax Tackle at the moment. Dave
  3. I have a Daiwa Harrier Z which I find quite confortable to fish with all day when balanced with my Purist. It's rated for lines up to 6lb as well. A very good rod. Dave
  4. I only knew him from this site but it was obvious he was a true gent. A very sad loss. Dave
  5. Matt - A quick Google for 'Seldex centrepin' threw up quite a few hits from collecters sites. It looks a bit like the Trudex doesn't it which they are still selling today (I think). Got to admit I had never heard of the reel prior to 'Googling'. Dave
  6. I largely agree with Matt although I think a line guard should be a detachable option. Some say they hinder Wallis casting but I've not found this to be the case. Dave
  7. Try these:- Digital scales Compact, accurate and totally reliable. Just get yourself a rigid container (£1.00 from Morrisons in my case) to stop them switching themselves on in the tackle bag. Dave
  8. The Trent isn't really out of sorts Mark but it can be a little bit daunting with a lot of water on. I had a reasonable barbel session last Friday and the humble lobworm and meat are doing the biz. Dave
  9. I think that what we need is for another river to rival the Ouse in terms of size of fish caught. Recently the Wensum, Trent and Kennet have thrown up some very big fish and when the barbel record does go to another river some of the understandable cynicism should disappear. Dave
  10. I suspect it's the tarted up version of the RE5000 that Dave is referring to at that price. The 'limited edition' has a spare spool and a double handle unlike the original RE. A quick web search can't find anyone discounting below £50 a reel Dave. Dave
  11. This place is pretty good. Direct Photo Dave
  12. It's not an ideal situation to have a levy such as this going to a single unelected body but surely it better than the present, fragmented, status quo? Besides, I don't care how much the different factions argue behind closed doors as long as we start to present a united front against our attackers. Dave
  13. Well done Waveney one in pointing this out. I've posted a response on there (as Dave59) and will try to check back from time to time to post something. Dave
  14. River fishing is particularly fascinating Janet because the environment is so dynamic. The river changes according to the seasons and the weather and the fish respond to these changes, meaning you have to respond as well! Anyway, you’ve now caught some very nice fish so carry on doing what your doing and the chub, carp (and barbel. Are they in the river? Could be what you lost) will come. Dave
  15. The weight of the Purist has never been an issue with me Chris although that might be because it balances out my 17' Daiwa Harrier Z nicely. I envy you the Lythe though. Beautiful reels. Dave
  16. Stick with the Purist and it'll loosen up nicely. Mine was an excellent reel to start with but sometimes you had to set the spool spinning. Now, 3 years later, it's incredibly free-running and practical to use with floats taking a BB or less in slow flows. Dave
  17. Yes, most definitely an ironical comment . Dave
  18. It's nice to see someone at least trying to address the carp shortage Dave
  19. A. How long have you been fishing after the age of 12? 35 years B. How many days a year do you fish? 20-25 C. How many times have you had your Rod Licence checked (by official WA/NRA/EA baillif as opposed to club baillif or fishery owner)? 2 - But not in the last 29 years Dave
  20. I agree Stewart, it's far from ideal. However, as I get to go all too rarely I'm going to take the chance of a session. Should be there about 21:00 'ish now so hopefully I will be able to see what I need to given that I am familiar with fishing the tidal (a bit lower down though). Cheers Dave
  21. Many thanks chaps. Looks straightforward and I'll try and browse through those articles. Dave
  22. Thanks, very useful. Will give the numbers a try. Cheers Dave
  23. I’m hoping to have my first ever session on the tidal Trent at Collingham this weekend but want to avoid the crowds up by the weir. I’ve heard there’s a second entrance taking you to the downstream part of the fishery but as I’m going to be arriving in the dark I wondered if anyone would be kind enough to provide directions for this entrance? Thanks in advance. Dave
  24. Thanks Mark. I think it'd be rude of me to turn a sem-social trip into a barbel quest unfortunately. Don't mind chub and I'll go for those. Thanks again. Dave
  25. Thanks Dave(?). Looks a nice place
