  1. I'm off on my travels again in a couple of weeks and will be in South East Asia for a while. On my last trip, I saw a couple of operators in Singapore offering a 3 day sail-fishing package to Rompin for about Sin$300. Has anyone fished this area ? Is it worthwhile ?
  2. I saw Morcombe bay described as a "public fishery" as far as cockles go but if it's being harvested by 400 people on every tide, I'd be amazed if it can sustain that kind of pressure. Once again, we seem to be seeing the sea treated as a resourse to be rapped. Clearly it's time for all commercial marine harvesting to be licenced and regulated.

    Corn beef?

quote: It isn't particularly good for non-predatory fish to give them pure protein, without any carbohydrate. I'm not so sure about that statement. Insect lavae, shrimps, crayfish and all manner of mollouscs are pretty much pure protien without any carbohydrate and nobody would suggest that these are bad for the diet of "non-predatory" fish. I do agree with Pangolin's general gist though, but for a slightly different reason. Luncheon meat has a very high fat content which wprobably wont do fish any good if so much is chucked in that it rots on the bottom.

    Dilema

Would you select colour film, or rather go with the classic simplicity of black and white?

    Dilema

This test only has one question, but it's a very important one. Please don't answer it without giving it some serious thought. By giving an honest answer you will be able to test where you stand morally. The test features an unlikely, completely fictional situation in which you will have to make a decision. Remember that your answer needs to be honest, yet spontaneous. Please scroll down slowly and consider each line -- this is important for the test to work accurately. You're in Florida - in Miami, to be exact. There is great chaos going on around you, caused by a hurricane and severe floods. There are huge masses of water all over you. You are a photographer with a major international news organization and you are in the middle of this great disaster. The situation is nearly hopeless. You're trying to shoot very impressive photos. There are houses and people floating around you, disappearing into the water. Nature is showing all its destructive power and is ripping everything away with it. Suddenly you see a man in the water. He is fighting for his life, trying not to be carried away by the masses of water and mud. You move closer. Somehow the man looks familiar. Suddenly, you know who it is -- it's George W. Bush himself! At the same time you notice that the raging waters are about to wash him away, forever. You have two options. You can save him or you can take the best photo of your life. So, you can save the life of George W. Bush, or you can shoot a Pulitzer prize winning photo, a unique photo displaying the death of one of the world's most powerful men. And here's the question (please give an honest answer):
  6. I've tried a couple of times to post a link but it's not working. Have a look at Barlows fishing tackle in Texas. They do what they describe as a diamond spoon mould. Weights from 1 - 6 oz are available. [ 02. February 2004, 10:12 PM: Message edited by: Ken L ]
  7. In the seventies, we were involved in a conflict with Iceland over access to cod stock. Shots were fired, but the Icelanders won the day. In the early eighties, we had another set to with the Argies over the Faulklands. Same thing only this time there were bigger guns and it was over the sea-trout fishing.
  8. Try "The sixth shieks sixth sheep's sick" or for those that like 'em short "Unique New York" [ 30. January 2004, 08:43 PM: Message edited by: Ken L ]
  9. 15 or 20 years ago, something like 25% of global record sales were generated by British bands. Now the Americans totally dominate the album sale market. This decline in the British record industry almost perfectly mirrors the increasing conservatism of mainstreem radio and (single) record realeases who don't seem to whant anything to do with bands that won't behave and arn't totally manfactured. Causation or corrolation ? You decide..
  10. Birmingham fish market does a roaring trade in carp, bream, roach (averaging over a pound each) and eels. I once heared that the bream and roach were trawled commercially in Ireland but can't confirm this. They also regularly sell pollen which I know are trawled in Northern Ireland. Strangely enough, I've never seen Pike, Perch or Zander for sale there - maybe there's a better price for them on the continent. Whould I eat a fish that I've caught ? Well I've not eaten a freashwater fish from the UK for a few years but now that I've located filleting instuctions for Pike on the net, I fully intend to give one a go this year. My only stipulations being that it's from a clean river or lake, it's between 4 and 6lb and it's unfortunate enough to be caught right at the end of a session so the flesh will be at it's best when I eat it.
  11. Cheers. I'll give that a go.
  12. Just ignore the singles chart and make the effort to see what's going on. There's masses of top bands out there that'll never get airplay on the dance and boy band oriented pile of bland teen fodder that is radio 1 !!!! Even when good bands chart they don't make the playlist. You don't have to accept this. check out R2 where there are a few decent shows amongst the fogie fair. Alternatly, check out Kerrang or Scuzz (if that's your taste) on Sky. Personally, I get myself down to the record library and borrow those albums that I can't be arsed to by for 75p a throw.
  13. Chears Howard 13. I'll give it a go next time I want to link to a site in a post. Is it possible to do the same trick without using Elton's fine software - in Outlook or similar ?
  14. I know how to insert a hyperlink to a web page into an e-mail or other block of text but I keep seeing a very nice little trick on this forum that I'd love to try. Instead of inserting the full URL into the text, several posters will suggest that someone looks "Here" and the word "Here" contains an embedded hyperlink that takes you straight to a web page. So, howdya do it fellas ???
  15. I picked the idea up from an Aussie mag called "Freshwater Fishing" and the article was definatly referring to it being a Kiwi idea. Of course, that's not to say they didn't knick it from the Norwegians. The knot slipping off the hook ain't a problem if you use barbed hooks....
  16. I got into chucking lures and it was a logical progression. Strangely enough, as much as I enjoy catching wild trout, I can't bear to fish the game worlds equivellent of carp puddles (yeh sure, I know this is anything but a universal view) so most of my fly fiching time is taken up targetting dace and chub with a #5 weight outfit or pike on a #9 weight.

    Travel Outfit

Well, I decided to go with the Exage 20 - 30lb class boat rod instead of the stand up stick. It was deafinatly the right choice because the setup is now a kind of baitcasting outfit on steroids. It might be a bit heavy for lures but I reckon I should be able to lob a lead 40m or so with it, which means that I've effictivly got a heavy beach rod as well as a boat rod. Now at least I wont have to pay for every oppertunity to fish. My only problem is that I've now got three rods that I want to take with me instead of two. Ah well, so much for travelling light.....
  18. I have no beef with paying £30 quid a year yet alone the £22.50 or so that's charged at the moment. I only have two stipulations Firstly, the money raised should be regionally ringfenced so that it's spent where it is raised. How many of us living in cities get the feeling that the cash raised fron course anglers is going on building fish ladders so that half a dozen rich boys can continue to enjoy Salmon fishing near their highland retreat when a hydro scheme is set up ? Secondly, the EA should be totally transparent and publish full details of how the money raised is spent.
  19. 99% of the time I just use a single fly. On those occasions where I do decide to use a dropper, I tie a loop in the leeder using a 4 turm water knot and then snip it asymetrically so that the short end is the dropper and the long one has the point fly attached. The knot is pretty well secure and is my first choice for almost every other application from Makeral feathers to paternostering with a feeder. Interestingly, the Kiwis don't tend to use droppers at all. They tie on a point fly then attatch an additional length of line to the bend of the hook and a second fly attaches to this. I've not tried it yet but as long as there's no hinge effect to bugger up the turnover, I reckon it might cut down on tangles.
  20. Only green ? Blue & fawn would be nice, that way the bivie boys can wear an AN "T" shirt every day and their fellow anglers couldn't accuse them of being soap dodgers.
  21. Lydon has to be one of the most abraisive opinionated loudmouths ever produced by this country. Watching him tear the little pop mayflys a new ars£hole might even be fun.....
  22. Part of the fun of a forum like this is that you can pick up ideas from someone who's targetting a different species using methods that you perhaps wouldn't consider and then apply them in a new and inovative way - and then brag about the results........ Carp do nothing for me but these's no shortage of expertise amongst the folks that target them for me to tap into. Trouble is, I can't be arsed to keep a constant eye on the carp forum to pick em-up. Setting up a separate predator forum can only ditract from the whole.
  23. Weired ! It just so happens that if you get hold of a freashly dead cat by the tail (make sure it's had time to stiffen up properly)it's just the job for cleaning the toilet.
  24. "All hell would break loose" Well that it might, but have to say that I agree with the french. Religion and all the symbols and signs that go with it have no place in public life, no place in schools and no place in hospitals. Personally, I would go much further. I do not and never have believed in a "multicultural" country. No that doesn't make me a racist because I have no beef with the country being multiethnic and whilst I don't think that immigrant communities should forget where they came from (and be proud of it), they should wholehartedly embrace this country and it's values. English should be the only language (supported by BSL) that public services are offered in and non English speakers should PAY for their own interpreters if they are needed. We need a bit of a cultural refocuss as well. It seems that we're only to happy to "celebrate" other cultures but have become afraid of our own in case celebrating that offends the guests that are resident here. I have to laugh at the bloody doogooders that blart on about a multicultural society and how wonderfull it is and then moan about how terrible it is to have some immigrant bloke set fire to his new bride so he can re-marry and get a second dowery. Don't they realise that the bloke burning his inocent young bride is acting in a mannor that is entirely consistent with the forign cultures that they are so keen to establish and propergate here ????
