  1. Yoxer, have a look at these prices for my area Barrow Ulverston Kendal Lancaster Morecambe Penrith All I asked for was some help/advice if you have spend 25 years doing it then it must have been worthwhile. I didnt think insurance would be cheap but someone must provide cover unless all the market traders have lied on their insurance details. Scott.
  2. I think thats because people take on far too much i.e. loans, overheads etc and dont get the returns to keep up the payments. Dont know where you live Yoxer but up north prices for a pitch/stall are around £10-£20 a day, yes there are dearer ones (Lancaster indoor being very dear)but £20 a day is a normal price. Thanks to the rest for the help and advice, I realise that it will involve a great deal of work and a great deal of research before hand, to explain how i'm going to go about it my simple idea is to buy a van which at the end of the day will still be mine and risk/spend £2000-£3000 of my redundancy cash on stock, if it fails then ive only lost 2-3 grand, i'll still have a van and still have a big lump of my redundancy cash left, im not naive enough to risk my home or to take out big loans to finance it, if I cant get what I want by using 50% of my redundancy then i'll have to look for a normal job and/or re-train for something. Working for myself is something i've wanted to try for many years and a forced redundancy has just given me the push I needed (and the cash to make it happen), hence my posts asking about market stalls and franchises. Alan, I like your idea of starting at car boot type sales so much that I think thats where i'll start. But i'll keep looking till I get pushed (sometime in Feb) and posting further questions. Thanks guys, Scott.
  3. Does anyone here do it? Any hints tips or advice for someone thinking of trying it. Any websites or books you could recommend. As ive mentioned before i'm facing redundancy in the comming months i've looked at franchising (some good ideas put paying a monthly fee puts me off)now im looking at a market stall. Any help would be very wellcome, Scott.

  11. Its not just Perch, my local club made a decision a few years ago to have their main match waters netted for eels, many eels were removed, (I didnt agree with this and it has been covered before) but it seems to have worked. The shoals of fry in the margins are now larger than anyone can remember, I suppose more eggs are left alone to hatch. Just a theory, but we seem to be facing a huge decline in the amount of eels at the moment but at the same time we are seeing more and more large perch caught, could this be conected? If less eels are allowing more fry to survive then there is more food for the perch to grow. Anyone that has kept & bred fish will tell you that its important for maximum growth that fish get a good supply of food from the start, with a huge increase in numbers of fry a 1-2 inch perch would get of to a great start and soon pile on the weight. Any comments? Scott. [ 27. October 2002, 12:39 PM: Message edited by: Scott ]

  15. Has the water been fished a lot recently? Finiky bites are a good sign of angling pressure. I would have thought with your experience Greg you would have more answers than most people here. Scott.
  16. quote: Originally posted by Elton: Dunno about that, but I saw yesterday that the Royal Mint is losing millions of pounds a year. Is that loosing money in a business way? Or "we had a pile of money here but cant find it" way? Scott.
  17. From here I found this: I have a £2 coin with the Queen wearing a necklace but all my other £2 coins have a different Queen's head. Is it worth anything? Yes - £2! There is a common misconception that the 1997 £2 coin (the one showing the Queen with a necklace) is worth more than later issues but sadly this isn’t the case. The rumour started because in 1997, when the £2 coin was due to be launched, there was a problem with the electronic signature (which allows vending machines to tell what coin it is). This meant the launch was delayed until spring 1998. In the meantime the Queen’s portrait was changed and it was thought that the ‘old style’ £2 coins wouldn’t be issued at all; this would mean that those pre-sold in packs or sets would be the only ones bearing the “Necklace portrait”, making them rare. However, as 13 million 1997 £2 coins had been minted, it was decided to release them anyway - meaning that they are actually quite common. The reason that they aren’t as common as the ones featuring the other portrait of the Queen is simply that “only” those 13 million were minted, whereas every £2 coin since then has had the other style bust on it, just like every other coin minted from 1998 onwards. and from The Royal Mint When people ask how many 1933 pennies there are we can say that we have a fairly good idea but the truth is that we do not know for sure. There is firm evidence for six specimens, and more tentatively we think that a seventh may have been struck. But with no record having been kept of precisely how many were actually made we cannot be absolutely sure of the number. The Royal Mint strikes coins on demand. If there are enough of a particular coin already in circulation there will be no requirement for the Mint to add to the existing stock. This was no less true in the 1930s than it is today and it goes a long way to explaining why it is that the 1933 penny is one of the most valuable coins of which you are ever likely to hear. There was a marked variation in the number of pennies produced in the fifteen years after the end of the First World War. Large numbers were issued between 1919 and 1921, but no pennies were released bearing the dates 1923, 1924 or 1925, and again by 1932 the major banks had such large quantities in hand that there was no need strike pennies dated 1933. In these circumstances no pennies of 1933 should exist. There is a tradition, however, of burying complete sets of current coins under the foundation stones of new buildings and in 1933 the Mint received three requests to this end. Robert Johnson was the Deputy Master of the Mint and in deciding that a very limited number of complete sets of British coins dated 1933 should be prepared to satisfy this demand he knew that he was creating a modern rarity. A set of coins, including a 1933 penny, was sent to the University of London in Bloomsbury and also to two churches in the diocese of Ripon in Yorkshire. The Mint kept two specimens for its own collection and in addition one was given to the British Museum. Scott.
  18. Bit late to this sorry. Attached pic is my downrigger in use, I use it mostly for trolling spoons/spinners, and deadbaits. They are very handy but only on big waters where the depth changes are small, so the lead isnt hitting the lake bed all the time, its not often I use it but when I do its because nothing else will do the job as well or as accurate. Scott.
  19. You were robbed, isnt the 1933 penny the UK's rarest coin? Scott.
  20. Hi Alan, I did this a while ago. What I did was to email the magazine and ask. It all depends on copyright and if they want world or country exclusive or not. In the UK ive just sent articles in and if they have liked them I have recieved a letter telling me then the cheque arives some months later. With USA mags they send you a contract which you sign and return with your article. Of course they might all not be like that but thats how its worked out for me. You might have to edit your work a bit to suit the country you are trying to sell it in as some countrys wont understand a UK approach. Scott.
  21. My company has decided to loose 40% of the staff in the next few months. I guess my name will be near the top of the list (many reasons) so i'll be looking for a new job. I dont want to be working for someone else so i'm looking into using my pay-off to perhaps invest in a franchise, (no ideas yet, still looking) has anyone here any first hand experience of starting a franchise or anything that might help, i've found a few websites but there might be more. Any help would be very wellcome, Scott.
  22. The new website for the P.A.A.S (Pike Anglers Alliance for Scotland) is now online. The old address, esoxecosse.co.uk will be redirected shortly, the new site is Here Scott.
  23. There was a legal case recently where someone persistantly replied to the same company, using their prepaid envelopes, except he was selotaping them to a house brick, when the company got really funny with him he replied by sticking the envelope to a box of bricks. After a while he ended up in court, not sure what happened but a one-off should be ok. Start colecting a brick ready for when the peta envelope drops through the door. Scott.
