  1. Colin, That's the best post on this thread so far IMHO. As long as it is clear that "undersized" applies strictly to those species that have a MLS I don't think it would be a lot to lose compared tp the right to collect worm and crustacea. I personally wouldn't use an undersize fish as bait, alive or dead, and I don't think I know anyone who would.
  2. Thank you for your concern Glenn, I'm much better now or so the nice men in white coats tell me. They are related to seahorses and look a bit like them but longer. Have a look here http://www.glaucus.org.uk/Pipefish.htm
  3. LMAO I just had a mental picture of a cod "smoking" a pipe-fish. Maybe whilst wearing some slipper-limpets?
  4. ALDERNEY OK, so I'm biased. I live there. I fish there. I love it there.
  5. Not usually, perhaps I should This news sounds like a small step in the right direction to me.
  6. Hi Tony, When I used to live in Walderslade there was a saying "If Kent is the garden of England the Isle of Sheppey must be the outside toilet" . Not true, I'm sure. (He said, ducking in case any Sheppey residents read this post )
  7. I agree Steve, I'm sure that I waste less than that when I fillet fish too. I suppose if you are filleting fish for a living the waste aspect is less important that the time taken and by removing as much as this chap ensures no bones in your customer's throat's.
  8. Thanks for that Andrew. I didn't notice that Grant is in Jersey, I thought he was in UK, where they do call them maddies in some parts. I think there are several other names too.
  9. Hi Grant, Rock worm or Rockbait is what you would probably know as maddies, a small variety of ragworm similar in appearance to king rag but only growing to around six inches long. It lives in gravelly, rocky areas, hence the name. It is often found in the same areas as verm, but not so deep down. Not as good a bait as verm, but very good for many species nonetheless. Alderney Bassman, Great report mate!
  10. I fished a well-known Alderney mark yesterday and had this mullet of around 5lbs on bread on a size 8 Kamasan fished deep under a float. Lost another, possibly bigger fish through trying to bully it away from rocks. I hope I can repeat the feat during the Alderney Angling Festival which starts tomorrow. Edit- forgot to mention, I couldn't weigh it as I had no scales with me and it was returned alive.
  11. I get so many of these scams I lose count. most are laughably amateur but some are very plausible. Latest of these is a fake Ebay invoice for items you haven't purchased. The "seller" masquerades as a genuine Ebay member so that if you go to Ebay to look for the username it looks genuine. I can only imagine that if you email them back the story will be that there has been a mix-up, please let me have your details etc, etc. Either that or they are hoping you are a heavy user of ebay and won't notice you are paying a spurious invoice. I don't know, pubic hanging is too good for them

    malta

I was in Malta back in April. As you say, not a soul fishing from the shore so seems unlikely that shore fishing is any good. There are a few fishing harbours around the island, Marsaxlok (spelling?)is full to bursting with small fishing boats, so there must be something to be caught somewhere. I didn't notice any charter boats.
  14. If most of the threads have a politics/conservation theme that must mean that most of the people posting on them have an interest in politics/conservation. If you're not interested, read another thread. If there aren't enough posts about catches/bait/tactics etc, start a new thread, that's what the forum is here for. Totally agree.
  15. OK, so after your "not controversial" post. How's about a nice report on your last fishing session to get the ball rolling?
  16. Quote from that article: "Spanish MEPs are putting the profits of their fishermen above the best interests of our oceans. The EU's laws are already pitiful compared to countries like the USA." Says it all.
  17. I'm right with you on smokers litter The other thing is chewing gum that some dirty gits just gob out on the ground
  18. Nice fish guys, especially that turbot Stoaty. Can't tell from the picture but it must have been nice and fat to go 32lbs. Ive seen a 27lb come over the side on the Schole bank so i wouldn't be at all surprised to see a 30+ caught off Alderney one day. Just hope it's me on the other end of the line!
  19. I see you misspell differently. Ian, Job done.
  20. So, lets just see if I understand this. These guys like the taste of freezer burnt cod and only go fishing once a year to fill their enormous home freezer that holds 8 stone of fillets as well as the burgers, peas, chips and all the other stuff?
  21. Toerag, You have a foot in both camps as a licensed commercial fisherman and an angler. you are obviously leaning towards the stance taken by Peter Munro of the Guernsey Fishermen's Association, to whom I'd say the same thing as I'm saying to you. Show us the evidence. Oh, I forgot, there isn't any. It's just the smokescreen that's being used to allow GSF to "re-allocate the resource". The charter boats are not taking away anyone's livelihood. Look at the catch statistics for the last few years and see the record landings by the commercial fleet. there must be a market or they wouldn't bother fishing for fin fish.
  22. Some of the local fishermen were in nappies when the angling tourism started in Alderney. No-one is making demands for anything other than to continue as per the last 20 years. Yes, a lot of fish but completely unrealistic. There is only sufficient accommodation for maximum 120 anglers, assuming that none of the guest house beds have other guests in them so there is a natural limit on numbers. If you are right about the motivation they haven't thought it out very well as this will definitel;y be detrimental to the tourism sector in Alderney. Bill. An Alderney Guest House proprietor.

    Swim bladder bass

Wow! decompression stops for fish! I suppose that's a great idea unless 3 or 4 guys have fish on at the same time. that could be the recipe for the mother-of-all-tangles. I should think that in tropical waters the fish might be in more danger of being eaten by sharks in mid-water rather than swimbladder problems

    Swim bladder bass

Leon, Excellent post. i didn't know that you could vent the swimbladder that way. I thought, wrongly, that it was done by popping the protruding stomach. Next time I get a deep water trip I'll be taking a syringe with me, just in case.
