I won't use stainless either. Apart from the obvious danger, I dont find them particularly easy to keep sharp. The only stainless circle hook that I've come across is the Mustad stainless streamer. The rest appear to be degradeable steel.

Nothing that swims in freshwater or salt in the UK, with the possible exception of common skate, big wreck conger and the larger members of the shark family, would rate a circle hook beyond a 5/0. These are BIG hooks. Far bigger than standard pattern hooks of similar named sizes and thicker in the wire. Not a good picture but its good enough to illustrate the difference. The following picture compares a 4/0 Mutu light circle with an 8/0 Breakaway Spearpoint.

Whatever size you use its vital that you not only do not mask the point but also do not mask the gape. The best way to set them up with big baits is with a hair rig from the eye of the hook or a bridle rig from the bend with whole fish baits. Thats the tradional way, but by all means experiment, I'd be interested to hear how you get on. Before you go to that much trouble make sure you really need a circle hook. There's an immediate case for flies or lures, bites can often be tentative...cautious.... half hearted. Baits not so much, particulary for cod and bass. Although it occurs to me that fine wire freshwater circle hooks and mullet might go together well.

As an experiment Ian I have added much larger eyes to 2 of the lures. You are the test pilot on this one to see if this lure has more "fish appeal". They certainly look the part. Putting the epoxy head over the large eyes will be quite a challenge. You will probably hear me cursing cos I am only 180 miles away from you!!!!!!!

I think the larger eyes are a great idea. Should add to the appeal.

The ones you made up for me arrived in the mail on Monday. Wonderful looking lures but horrible timing. I had surgery Monday morning and while I'm home and doing well, the surgeon (also an angler so I gotta listen to him) said absolutely no taking the boat out for 3 weeks.

So I guess I'll just be admiring them for a while.
