ive just really started carping this year but been coarse fishing for about 20 years its taken me 10 years to beat my PB carp which i did on thursday :) with a fine common of 18 1/2lb and im over the moon. of course im gonna try and beat it again but for me its not the size of fish ,if its big then thats a billy bonus fishing should be about getting out there and enjoying wot u do as long as i dont blank im happy even if i catch a 2oz perch. as for rules on places people should stick to them as you should respect the owners/leasers rules if you dont like the rules find somewhere else to fish.

Absolutely Edd thats my attitude now as well as long as i can catch something i am happy, if its a carp its a bonus, and if its a big carp i am over the moon for days :D

You are right of course rules should be followed but with so many of the big names admitting to breaking the rules its no wonder other angler think its ok to do so.

I hope i am wrong but i can see in the future loosing access to a load of waters as the owners get p****d off with rule breaking carp anglers on thier property.

But they don't do they? They carry on abusing the rules and get away with it.

Growing old is inevitable but growing up is optional

Not at Wingham they don't!

no they dont but thats because people let them get away with it. if someone went around checking and done it often people would soon stop breaking the rules. and do a 2 strikes and your out warning 1st time banned the next time. word would get out that that place is strict and not break the rules.

Experienced an ugly side to fishing myself tonight. The lake I go to is day ticket but members can night fish and there is a special members only section. I was speaking to a guy that I know is not a member (fished alongside him last week) all bivied up for the night in the members only section. I tactfully asked him when he'd got his membership through and he jumped down my throat and told me he wasn't a member - but what the "donald duck" was it to do with me! He invited me to try and throw him off if I wanted to - which I declined (I had my 12 year old daughter with me and he had a baseball bat!!). We moved away and I saw the bailiff fishing further down the members only section. On raising the issue with him I was informed that as a non-member myself it wasn't really any of my business. He added that as bailiff it was up to him - and if he wanted to let this bloke fish then that was his decision. I asked him to remove my name from the waiting list and assured my now tearful daughter not to worry - we wouldn't be fishing there again! That's not what I want her to learn about fishing!

....Here's to swimming with bow-legged women....

Steve, a serious question...under what curcumstances would you or one of your bailifs be justified in asking an angler (carper) to reel in so you/they could check the bait/rig?

Not trying to be awkward but imagine the scenario of a succesful angler being expected to let "show all"!!!

I would find it very hard not to refuse any request......certainly would want to keep my bait secret if I was catching :D:D

Some of the so called bailifs I have met would be answered with a polite "get lost"

That is shocking Cidermonkey. In fact the whole scenario highlighted in this thread is pretty shoddy.

I hate people taking liberties, so in the case of Severn Wolf, I think you're doing absolutely right in notifying the governing body. If you did nothing & returned to fish there next year, you would be so wound up knowing that others on the water were cheating it would totally spoil your own enjoyment, I know it would mine.

cidermonkey, I reckon you should report the appaling way you were spoken to by both the knobhead angler & the bailiff to the waters ruling body, . Nobody should have to put up with such behaviour.

The bailiff on the syndicate water I fish does check your rigs & baits - I for one, welcome it. I've nothing to hide & nor should anyone else fishing the water.

regards

Den, I was referring to rulebreakers getting caught and then not getting either suspended or losing their ticket altogether.

I've never asked to see anyone's bait and I don't expect my bailiffs ever have. The only time I'd ask is if I had reason to think they were using nuts, the only bait I ban. This is because there's evidence that they adversely affect the growth of the fish - which no member wants.

As to rigs, it's largely a question of trust. Again I've never asked to see a member's rig. On the other hand, I've never seen any fish trailing a rig.

It's much easier on a syndicate water as everyone is vetted before being offered a ticket, plus you get to know the members. They're not "fish at all costs merchants".

Additionally, with the standard of fishery that Wingham has now developed into, I doubt that many would risk losing their ticket. The very few members with the wrong attitude simply don't get their tickets renewed at the end of the season, even if they haven't actually broken any rules.

It's therefore rare that I have to take any action. This could be a quiet word, a suspension, or kicking someone out altogether, depending on the severity of the offence.

However, there's absolutely no quarter given. A serious offence, such as leaving rods unattended, would result in immediate expulsion. I'm pleased to say that my members go to Wingham not to socialise but to fish, and in 12 years only 1 member has been caught away from his rods. I told him to pack his gear immediately and he lost all the money he'd recently paid.

Nor does it make any difference whatsoever who the angler is. The rules are the same for everyone. To work any other way is unfair, and would cause bad feeling. The only perk anyone gets is a very occasional day's pike fishing.

If any bailiff gave special dispensation to friends he'd soon be an ex-bailiff! I'm pleased to say my bailiffs do an excellent job and are well-respected by the members.
