Any chance on letting us know what the most challenging fish to catch was and what the most fulfilling/satisfying to catch was? :-)

Hi, have only just landed back from a Bankholiday fishing trip in the IOM

 

No, not much, small gurnard, small pollack, small whiting

 

Needless to say, the Sun have not contacted me - just lifted stuff from AM

 

AM, to do them credit, got the facts I gave them right.

 

The Sun, to do THEM credit, have got it NEARLY right.

 

1. There are about 30,000 species of fish (give or take a couple of thou) worldwide.

 

2. The Peacock Bass is a Xingu Peacock Bass - I have yet to fish the Amazon.

 

3. ..and its me, not Don Wheeler, that is looking for a ten-spined stickleback

 

so 7/10 for them - above average

 

Have got to do some fishing for the BBC SE TV cameras in the morning,

 

...and AM want to do a follow-up

 

....and umpteen local papers want a "story"

 

...and we are out on a Poole charter this weekend, leaving Friday

 

So will bring y'all up to date Monday

Hmm, now that the media are onto the story, I wonder if I should inform my insurers that I have a signed first edition of Angling Vagabond by the illustrious and celebrated man himself?

There is a guy in California who had had 660 species over a year ago. He wants to catch over 1000 (that was probably the origin of the Sun's confusion) He is a lot younger than me, so will probably succeed - and good luck to him in his efforts.

 

There are about 30,000 species of fish worldwide, but many of these are deepsea specialists, still others are extremely localised "tropical aquarium" sized fish in the various rainforests of the world. Still others such as the smaller pipefishes and micro-gobies are too small to take even the tiniest bait on a No 26 hook.

 

There are probably about 5000 that it would be realistic to catch on baited hook.

Anglers Mail want to do a follow-up for next week's edition, and have just emailed me those very questions (and lots of others)

 

I think it would not be fair to them if I stole their thunder before next Tuesday, but I will do an article for Elton when the dust has settled - at the moment several newspapers are clamouring for "news", but as Gozzer said, for many on here it is history.
