Although I also love Tench & Crucian fishing on still waters I much prefer river fishing and the 16th still has that extra magic about it. I love getting close and seeing the fish on a small stream and being able to rove from swim to swim looking for the fish instead of casting out into a known good swim on a stillwater and fishing virtually blind; river fishing is much more exiting to me. I won't be fishing until dawn on the 16th but the 16th still has the same magic to me.

I hope to maybe get the day off on the 16th and fishing a free stretch near me but these are few and far between and I'm not a member of any club so my options are limited.

Just because you can fish on lakes and canals during the 'closed season' does not mean you have too?

 

You could always try a little self denial and impose your own ban on your self? This may lead to all the excitment you used to feel when the closed season was in place and you would be able to spend some of the the extra time on sorting out your tackle.

 

Unfortunately my work is heavily loaded around March, April, May and the start of June and so I do not get many oppurtunities to fish during this period, so in effect my work commitments almost impose a closed season on me. However I doubt if I had the spare time to fish at this time of the year I could turn down the chance.
