Wild parrots in London - cannot be!

Was staying at my daughters at Thames Ditton over the weekend and was convinced I seen wild parrots flying around. They were white in colour,flew very quickly,had a long thin tail and squawked very loudly. Pointed them out to the wife but she was not convinced. Well you London lot,have you got a breeding parrot population down there or was it a case of too much drink (again) on my part?

They be Parakeets and they've actually been around for some years now.

There used to be a colony of Ring Necked Parakeets at Rhu on the Clyde. I don't know if they are still there or not.

 

Th London ones are well documented as you will have probably seen by now

I cant get enough of them, absolutely fascinated by them. My local stretch of the Thames is a haven for a flock of several hundred. My only problem with them is as someone has pointed out, they can be noisy little buggers. Sadly someone from the EA will eventually find a reason to cull them, probably for damaging cormorant breeding grounds.

there were green ones loose in Bromley when i was a kid (1960`s) a flock of 6/7 used to terrify my old mans pidgeons on an almost daily basis
