Last minute Wingham notes

As I posted on the weather forecast topic:

"Just got back from working/fishing at Wingham. Despite the big drop in water temperature I had 3 tench, an eel, and 2 perch (although only up to 2-06). The perch had started to feed as I packed up at lunchtime. Peggy had phoned to say that the local BBC had forecast thundery showers this afternoon, so I scarpered. They didn't materialise!

A member float fishing had 5 tench to 8-06 today in another part of the lake, whilst carp were crashing out on the Carp Lake."

I've been asked by a member worried about the weather forecast whether he can come next year instead. It's those who weren't offered a place this year who will get priority, not those who choose not to come. This mean that he'd get an invitation next year only if there are places left. This seems to me to be the fairest on those who missed out.

There have already been some cancellations. Neither Bill nor Ed Hand can make it, neither can Mike Joyce (Whiskerton). Their places have been offered to Ted 74 (who hasn't been before) and his mate Poledark to keep them together for future years, plus 3 Doors Down (Nic Horne). In the end Ted can't come, but in view of the possible strong winds I'm not going to replace his invitation. This will give more flexibility with swim allocation.

One word of advice would be not to groundbait heavilly, particularly the first 24 hours. This is because Wingham contains far less weight of fish per acre than the heavilly stocked waters that many of you are used to. You may also be baiting up the wrong spots! The bailiffs and I will help with the location of hot areas in each swim for those who'd like this info. Finally, with the weather cooling down the tench in particular may not be eating as much anyway.

There's also one correction to the notes I sent you. Due to the huge amount of BBQ nosh this year, the fridge to use for your own food is one of the ones in the bait room at the back of the clubhouse. This will be clearly signed though.

This is as good a place as any to ask any further questions about the Fish-In, but you may not get them answered immediately as we're all going to be out much of the time getting everything ready for The Invasion.

Will there be Heinz tomato ketchup at the BBQ, or is it own-label supermarket sauce?

Well we can confirm we will be coming; Sue had a bad day on Wednesday and was really down but has picked up considerably, we will be spending the night in the van as it will be more comfortable for her than bivvying out' so pop in for a cup of tea but don't all call at once and do not expect a civilised response after midnight unless:-

A. your bivvy has blown down or exploded

B. you have just smashed the Bream/Perch or Tench record

Sue has told me she will not be making mulled wine but it will be Sangria time if anyone fancies a drop on Saturday night.

We are really looking forward to this after a pretty dreadful last month or two

Thanks Steve

Weather and canceling a once-a-year Wingham weekend?

Good lord - if they forecast a hurricane I'd simply bring extra ground pegs to secure the bivvy.

Well I for one love big winds :) ( I suffer from them a lot :) )

Thanks for letting me fill a space Steve, as Newt says, "It would take a hurricane to stop me now"

Steve you mentioned a sudden drop in water temperature would this be down to only the surface layers getting the benfit of this last couple of weeks of warm weather and as soon as the weather dissapears the surface layers cool off again?

Is the temp much different to last time this year after that prolonged warm April?

I'm glad you mentioned the need not to bait so heavily, I can cancel the feed lorry now..

What time are the BBQ's on Saturday and Sunday?

Really looking forward to it despite my complete lack of tackle organisation not helped by the fact that I'm currently 125 miles away from it. Cue Saturday morning scramble...

By the way - Just a reminder that, if you are arriving early on Saturday, there will be freshly cooked bacon and sausage butties plus tea and coffee available from 07:00 in the clubhouse for any that want them. (Elton - Heinz Tomato Ketchup or HP Sauce OK included :P ).

See you there.

Dant, if you bring Great-grandmother's book in Norfolk dialect, I'll see you Sunday and do a swop !

I'll also have signed copies of Angling Vagabond (@ £11-50) for anyone else who wants a copy.

I won't be fishing - just taking photos and putting faces to names.
