Then give us a wave & I may be able to give you a ride! (wearing light blue overalls and a smile!)

Tight lines for the weekend non steamers!

fail to see the appeal ,stinking noisy things that cannot go for more than a few miles without stopping for water ,you can see why they disapeared when real engines apeared :D

But they haven't disappeared, they are still here. The 'real' engines that replaced them wore out long ago, to be replaced by more production line 'disposable' engines.

Anything made by Victorian engineers or using their techniques and patterns was built to last. As were most engineered items right up until the sixties. Yes the sixties. Remember 'Evening Star' the last steam locomotive to be built for British Rail?

What a beauty she still is, proper engineering.

Over-enginnering at its best.

i also remember hundreds of steam trains rusting on every siding ,yes a few were saved but they only live through massive effort ,they wernt designed to last but only exist because a high percentage of the original train has been replaced at stupid cost by volenteers ,the same as steam traction engines ,theres probably more now than in the sixties when i was a kid ,the reason they exist is exactly the same replace most of it and it lives the same as any toy even petrol ones.

its not over engineered definatly the opposite under engineered ,jap cars are over engineered ,finer tolerances = more to go wrong ,underengineered = hoofing great bits of metal with less moving parts = less breakdown.

old steam trains = get up at 5am light the bonfire add coal as ness ,leave at 7am ,new train push lever and off she goes ,point taken :D

steam ploughs as before but you need 2 ,position wire pull plough ,move both engines ad infinitum ,new tractore ,jump in cab start engine ,plough complete field ,watch steam engines move to second furrow ,have breakfast.

if steam was any good internal combustion would never have been invented.

we have an "old tyme" place down the road (the old kiln) they have a steam rally ,in other words clapped out smelly bits of iron blocking every road for miles ,they also had a "war" one ,this means clapped out jeeps with yehawing tossers wearing american military uniforms in over restored vehicles breaking down on every road, at least with them you can get passed whilst giving them a churchill salute .

Looks like you do not have an ounce of nostalgia in you chesters.

The main reason the steam engine lost its foothold was with labour costs rising sharply after WW2. Ways had to be found to speed up the rate at which a job could be done, as we hurtled headlong into the modern high speed world we know today. A time where no one has time for anybody else but themselves and God help those who get in their way.

I still love the smell of hot oil and steam, even on a hot Summers day, remember them, they lived and breathed life.

You never heard of the 'wrong type' of leaves on the line or the 'wrong type of snow' causing chaos when the railways ran steam locomotives.

Modern internal combustion engines have been responsible for many of the problems we see today, global warming, increased cancer rates, increases in Asthma and other respiratory diseases and probably many other health problems. Ok, so it has not been proved in all the case mentioned above, but then the vested interests in oil have made sure of that.
