The Nash SS scales are good and seem to be quite accurate. They have a hook and bar to hang the scales off in the manner TT says so not to distort the reading.

Just got a set of Avons brand new, boxed for 32 squid plus 3 squid post so they're still 8 squid cheaper than the shop. Just hope there as good as everyone says.

It was off ebay Steve I just had a quick look for Avon scales and spotted them I only put 32 sqid on them and thought I would be outbid but I won them at that. Apparantly there's plenty on ebay like or as new, it mut be people who get them don't use them and buy/get digies or something. It's worth keeping an eye on there if anyones looking for a set. As I said I hope there as good as their reputation.

I've realised it was 34 squid plus 3 post I won them for but still 8 cheaper than the shop.

I got my Avons from ebay too. They're 2nd hand but in good condition and in excellent working order. They cost me just under £30 including postage.

Incidentally, at my last tench fishing session I weighed all the fish on my Rapalas and double checked the weights with my Shakespeares, and with a new battery and by holding them from the centre of the handle, the Rapalas were accurate. Still, I don't need the worry about whether the battery is full enough or if I'm holding them off-centre, so I'm still very glad I got the Avons!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I've been doing a little more investigating.

It seems that the Reuben Heaton weigh bar I have will probably solve the problem as it should allow most models of scales to sit vertically. I say probably as I can't lay my hands on mine right now. However I'll test this on my Rapalas as soon as I can.

I've found the weigh bar and indeed it does solve the problem!

It may well be the answer if you don't own a set of Avons, although it is more to carry around. Go to http://www.reubenheaton.co.uk/disprod1.asp...le=Weigh%20Bars

I've also bought some Avons off eBay and I'll be sending them off a service when I take my summer break from fishing.

I got mine off Ebay as well - bit of a club going here!

I paid about £28 inc P&P and they're in pretty good nick and came with the proper deluxe leather pouch. Just need to catch a fish that's worth weighing now!!!

Can I suggest anyone considering buying new scales, whether conventional or digital, reads this topic through from post 29 onwards.

I've discovered that Rapala do 2 different but similar digital models. The more expensive Pro model has a hinged handle that will get round the problem I wrote about earlier in this topic without resorting to a weigh bar. Go to http://www.fishtec.co.uk/online.cfm/pliers-and-scales/rapala-pro-guide-digital-scale/40/no/48909.

Unfortunately both models go up to only 50lbs. At Wingham I may need rather more than that as we're within ounces of 50lbs now.

The following may therefore fit the bill and has had good reviews: http://www.e-scales.co.uk/index.php?id_product=230&controller=product.

Unfortunately the handle doesn't look comfortable to hold (the cheaper Rapala I had is). Additionally it measures in kilos, decimals of a pound, or ounces. I'm happy to convert the latter, but not everyone will be.

It seems as though there's a gap in the market for something like the Rapala but going over 50lbs.

Any suggestions?
