Scales

This is what pretty much all serious carpers targeting the biggest fish seem to use: http://www.tacklefanatics.co.uk/product/7096/reuben-heaton-specimen-hunter-classic-60lb-x-1oz-scales.html

Exactly what I had for many years, and I can highly recommend them.

They're too big and heavy though for stalking.

Been using the Reuben Heaton Flyweights for years. Seem hardwearing and reliable, and small enough to fit in a pocket. They also have a natty little drawstring bag to keep them from getting scratched in storage. Mine are the 30lb set, but there's a set that goes to 40lb in ounce divisions.

I just won a set of Avons on eBay for a used set of Avon scales in excellent condition together with a weigh sling and pouch, and they cost me £31 Inc postage.

The wife bought me a set of Fox digitals but I much prefer using Avons and watching that needle creep around, it gives me confidence that they are working correctly and without having to worry about batteries; and my son now uses my Fox digitals.

40lb avons.

60lb salter night scales for carp fishing.

My first ever which I still have: 25lb little sampson spring balance which I take sea fishing or weigh luggage with.

Must find some pipe insulation for the avons handle. Horrible metal things which are slippery when wet.

I'm bringing this to the top as it's relevant to the current scales topics. In particular look at post 29 onwards. It shows why some scales may be inaccurate.

"Can I suggest anyone considering buying new scales, whether conventional or digital, reads this topic through from post 29 onwards.

I've discovered that Rapala do 2 different but similar digital models. The more expensive Pro model has a hinged handle that will get round the problem I wrote about earlier in this topic without resorting to a weigh bar. Go to http://www.fishtec.c...ale/40/no/48909.

Unfortunately both models go up to only 50lbs. At Wingham I may need rather more than that as we're within ounces of 50lbs now.

The following may therefore fit the bill and has had good reviews: http://www.e-scales....troller=product.

Unfortunately the handle doesn't look comfortable to hold (the cheaper Rapala I had is). Additionally it measures in kilos, decimals of a pound, or ounces. I'm happy to convert the latter, but not everyone will be.

It seems as though there's a gap in the market for something like the Rapala but going over 50lbs.

Any suggestions?"

With the Wingham carp record going to 54-12 recently, even 60lb scales might not be enough very soon!

However I think I may have at last found the answer. I 've just bought a set of Salter Brecknall Electro Sampsons. These digitals come in 3 sizes, mine weighing up to 99lbs in 1oz divisions. They come complete with a a case, 9volt battery, and a weigh bar (metal for the 99lb) or you can just use the hook in conjunction with a tripod etc. In each case they'll hang vertically, so should read accurately (see earlier in this topic).

I bought mine from http://www.ourweigh.co.uk/suspended-weighing/salter-brecknell-electro-samson.html as their price at £52.08 including delivery was way (sorry!) less than elsewhere. Delivery was supposed to be 2 days but they arrived in 1.

Just got to catch or witness something big enough now!

I have a Set of Reubens for the bigger stuff, but over the last 8 years have used Salter Electro Samson that weigh up to 55lbs in half ounces for smaller species.

As a records officer I had the scales checked every year and they have always checked out accurately!!

The Salter Electro Samson come with a weigh bar and you can't really use them without the bar.
