Wonderful TV series

Discovery Shed is showing a wonderful TV series on fishing.

'On the fly with John Bailey'.

No, I'm not posting on the wrong forum. It's not all game fishing.

Tonight's two half hour programmes have explored barbel fishing on the River Wye and roach fishing on the River Wensum.

Exquisite.

He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days without taking a fish. (Hemingway - The old man and the sea)

Ive seen most if not all of the series when it was shown on one of the Rural/Farming channels.Only thing I didn't like about them was John Bailey himself! Sorry but I cant bear the guy.

I hated him in "Casting for Gold" It was amazing that Paul Boote was ever able to sit down again Bailey was so far up his backside! I cant stand any of the articles he wrote in his monthly slot in Coarse Fishing! Although strangely enough I have enjoyed all the books he "co-wrote" with others.

He has always seemed to try and jump on anything new/in fashion just for the ride over the years and often tries to pass off "new" things as his own.I also have a problem with what he charges his customers for his guiding services/"Barbel schools" I worked damn hard as a guide and still thought what was charged for my services by the boss were high but he just takes the pi$$ Charging for name rather than anything else I feel.Jeeze it don't take much to suss out a bit of barbel fishing at home does it now?

Sorry just my view from his writings and TV appearances as Ive never actually met the guy.

But other than that the programmes are a pleasant enough bit of fishing and we shouldn't complain.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I'm with Budgie on this one. Saw the programs on Horse and Country when they were first on.

The fishing is OK to watch but the man irritates the living **** out of me with his condescending attitude.

Makes a change from John Wilson though :P

I've seen a few of these and I must say I don't think too much of the 'style' of the presenter to be honest. It all seems a bit wooden and forced. Some of the subject matter was a bit iffy too.

I especially didn't like the one set on the marsh/coast of Norfolk. I know you can't help the weather but being given a dried-out bass to cook at the end of the prog' was the last straw!

Sleeping we image what awake we wish;

Dogs dream of bones, and fishermen of fish.

Not a huge fan of John Bailey's style but watch the programs, but then again I will watch anything good or bad that is about fishing, sea, rivers etc.

I have even been watching Bob Nudd's Right Angle and thats total pants, but good if you are having problems sleeping late at night. Fifteen minutes of Bob Roach bothering and I'm in the land of Nod.

I haven't seen these programmes, but John Bailey is someone who I ought to really like, but for some reason can't as much as I'd like to. I mean absolutely no disrespect to him, he is a great all-rounder, a very good angler, and his roach fishing exploits are legendary. His writing is nearly always on subjects that interest me, but his writing style I find a bit difficult to lose myself in for some reason. I like him more as a presenter I think.

I don't know about his guiding, but I agree that celebrity angling guides are a terrible rip-off. Jim Shelley and Bob James spring to mind, but there are lots of others. But if people want to spend a load of money to spend a day fishing with their heros, why not? As long as it's not ruining other people's fishing (a particular problem with pike guiding I think?).

His anti-otter nonsense has altered my opinion of him more than anything else.

This sounds quite critical, but he's still a thousand times better as a writer and presenter than most other angling 'celebs'!

Miserable old lot, aren't we :P It'll be spring soon, don't worry :D

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Seen the programmes - that episode about fishing around the marshes where he told us about his bait digging job - 1,000 worms target day in, day out! S*od that! I don't warm to him as a presenter - comes across a bit too posh for me and it all seems a bit highbrow. I respect his angling achievements though.

His book, Roach - The Gentle Giants though is superb. I recommend it to any specimen hunter of any persuasion. His dedication and passion for his quarry shows thru on every page - he was doing before the internet and the ready exchange of ideas and venue info etc, so had to put in a load of pioneering time on waters just following hunches and scraps of info. I've read his book Perch - Contemporary Days and Ways aswell and although weaker, is still one of the few books available about perch and again, his passion for fishing does jump out at you.
