Are humans more important than fish?

Are we more important than fish - or other animals, for that matter? If so, why?

Personally, I think it is Ok to eat fish. But if some dictator had a couple of big sharks in a pool and fed humans to them, I would consider this very bad. Am I guilty of speciesism?

A very interesting question and bound to spark debate.

I suppose it depends on your believe system, if you believe humans have a soul then yes humans are more important then fish.

If you are more agnostic and take a scientific view of things, then humans are more evolved and higher up the chain and so are still more important then fish.

But if you are a total tree hugger and believe that all creatures are of equal merit then maybe you may feel that humans are not that important and so it may be exceptable to feed humans to your pet sharks.

However I would say humans are more important.

Stephen

However I would say humans are more important.

This is not a 'scientific' viewpoint at all and clearly demonstrates that one does not fully understand the Theory of Evolution. Humans are not 'more eveolved' than any other species, there are no chains or ladders in evolution. One could argue that many simple organisms like bacteria are much more highly evolved than we are. Many species of bacteria have a genome much more complex than ours, and have existed on this earth many millions of years longer than we have and will no doubt inherit the earth for millions of years after humans have driven themselves into extinction.

To answer Mr Tench's question I guess it would depend who was being fed to the sharks. Personally speaking I'd love shove this little **** in a tank with some sharks. Small sharks, 3 or 4 Lemon Sharks or half a dozen Silver Tipped Reef Sharks. he deserves to suffer pain.

Question for Mr Tench. If man is made in God's image, is He as conceited as are we? If not where does this stupid notion that everything in the universe was made just for a rather puny, but smart bald ape come from?

Well despite Cory's comments I agree with you that humans are more evolved in the sense that we have more advanced brains, for example. But does that necessarily mean we are more important or of greater value? I suppose the opposite seems a bit ridiculous, at least if taken to the extreme. If a bacteria is of equal value to you you could boost your value very quickly by eating one of those pills that contains millions of bacteria!

Personally I go for your first one. A 'soul' and such like. But I guess if I didn't I would go for the second one, but would feel I was 'skating on thin ice' in a way.
