maggot fishing for chub

I guess it wouldn't be so different fishing for carp on a commercial type fishery. None of the size 18 hooks I have look strong enough to give me confidence after one was bent partly straight by a chub a couple of weeks ago. Do most people use hooks to nylon or tie your own? And what hook type can you recommend?

I use a kamasan animal hook or a drennan super spade. In the size 14's I cram 10 maggots on and have no prob's whatsoever with hook up........just make sure you strike like a panther !

Never had either straighten or cause me to loose a fish.

I've been using Drennan Superspades for the last season and a bit - though if I'm targetting chub, trotting its usually in a 16....

These are the ones....

I find the super spades a bit heavy in the wire for my liking, and tend to go for this pattern, which is designed for the job:

Unfortunately, I've had these straighten too - and they are also now a discontinued pattern.

I do agree that I sometiomes find the super spade a 'bit heavy' and reserve them for when barbel may also be expected. I do use another brand and pattern, but for the life of me I can't recall what they are. I'll confirm tomorrow when I've had a look.

I ahve tried so many hooks over the years, I can't recall which ones I use, I tend to just pick up the packet that I want out of the box/bag by the colour and branding.

I think thye might be mustad, or kamasan. Either way, they are strong but wide gape.

I did try the Mustad AS10 Feeder hook, and whilst this is good, I experienced one encounter using a size 14 to 6lb line, when it was straightened. I did manage to landed a 7lb barbel with a 14 Mustad Feeder hook but it had to be replaced afetwards - it was by no means a perfect hook shape.

I'll tell you what the other hook is tomorrow as I can only e-mail from work. I've no internet at home - the hard drive is jiggered.

"My chub hooks, Bill!"

(Fishing without tears, Wiliam M Hill)............never did say what make or size they were though!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

A river keeper on a stretch of the Avon where I do much of my fishing swears by size 18 hooks paired up with double maggot.

I've tried various brands and had a few straighten out on me.

Never had a probem with Drennan barbless Super Specialists though. The same applies to a friend who uses the same hooks but barbed.

They're an eyed hook and tough.
