Manly rod names, do we need them?

I think most people on Anglers Net would agree that giving pet names to fish is stupid, but why do tackle companies insist on giving their rods such macho names. Do they think that anglers will go for a rod based on its "manly name"

 

I think you know the sort of thing I mean.

 

Daiwa Longbow, Daiwa Mission

 

Wynchwood Extricator, Wynchwood Riot

 

Leeda Assassin, Leeda Zoo Creature

 

Fox Warrior

 

Mustard Viking

 

Shimano Beastmaster, Shimano Carp Cruncher

 

Chub OutKast

 

Could they just not sell rods with the name spelling out the specific details i.e 1 TC Feeder Rod, do they really need to call it the "Carp Terminator" or "Carpet Bomber"

 

If they have to give them names could we not have names like , Mallard, Coot, Water lily and dispense with all this testosterone fueled macho rod names.

 

 

And as for buying "Longbows" I think that may be a case of BCSD :D

 

 

Anyway must go but I can't wait for the weekend to try out my new "Howitzer Pike Exterminator Rod", just the thing for a bit of Roach bothering at the week end.

I think I can date the start of this trend to the early 1980s. "Coarse Fisherman" magazine ran an article around that time criticising (admittedly in a light-hearted way) what the author (whose name escapes me) called the "Batman" syndrome in fishing. He related a conversation with a young angler in which the latter described his encounter with a carp in the following terms:

 

"I cast out 80 yards - POW! After only ten minutes, the fish took - WHAM!! Took me 5 minutes before I had it rolling on the surface in front of me - CRASH!!!" etc. etc.

 

Fishing seemed to have been transformed from a peaceful, contemplative pastime into something approaching all-out war (hence the start of macho names for tackle - especially carp tackle).

 

As every revolution inevitably results in eventual reaction, it's not surprising that a growing number of anglers are starting to adopt the "Chris Yates" approach in an attempt to re-establish a bit of calm... :rolleyes:

Bob Draper ( Rodrill was his own company and at one time he made all the rods for East Anglian Rod Co. ) used to name all his rods after birds, Goldcrest, and Cuckoo are the only two I remember right now but they all had bird names.

 

The Cuckoo was a barbel rod, in a delightful bright yellow colour iirc. :o

I would have said more mid 80's Davey but know what you mean! Even the way several writers of that time described the way the fish took or fought was laced with loads of macho adjectives!

 

In the 90's I was building a lot of top end beach casting/tournament rods for several of the well known sea fishing shops.Despite the undoubted supremacy of Zziplex at that time (and indeed still to this day) in the field a trend had come in for selling "shop specials".These were inevitably built on some companies standard blank and the only unique thing to the shop was the name! Due to so many doing this you couldn't just call them "so and so's tackle beach casting special" or "some wheres angling centre tournament special" but had to think up a catchy name,often the hardest part of selling the rod! Always macho names that inferred that the rod would cast massive distances or catch massive fish! Any "match" versions would obviously be given a name that inferred definitely winning!

 

And all this for an over priced rod built on a standard blank! I used to get great fun out of thinking up and suggesting to the retailer either totally outrageous names or even more fun (to my basic schoolboy toilet humour) ones with double entendres or sexual references (and you all thought Solar were the first!) Daft as you know what but even dafter and indeed funnier was when some retailers actually liked (often not realising the double meaning or tongue in cheek nature!) and got me to use them names on the rod!

 

The speed with which carp companies (in fact all companies regardless of species/market) "change" their models these days it must be a full time job thinking them up!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I don't know I might, I think they sound ok. As DavyR pointed out it's more evocative of carm peaceful summer days and relaxing and chilling out.

 

Even the name "Fox Afternoon Tea" has me mind drifting to maybe breaking open a bottle of wine from my wicker basket as I ponder how best to catch a few fish. Carefully unpacking a home maid sponge and cucumber sandwiches to enjoy on a rug spread out on the grass. Then after refreshments I would tackle up my "Fox Afternoon Tea" and cast in.

 

The names of most tackle imply all out warfare on the fish. It's more like we plan an all out attack to bludgeon all fin kind in to submission, rather then try to pit out skills against them and coax a few to the net.

 

I like the idea of using a "Fox Afternoon Tea" it just seems to much more sporting and gentlemanly then deploying my Warriors & Assassins against them. It all amounts to the same, but does it always have to sound so aggressive?

I think it was Mr Yates who likened modern carp/specimen fishing to warfare - batteries of rods, all camo'd up, etc.

 

I would love a rod named aftier lillies, birds and other nice things. The Normark Heron. The Daiwa Meander. The Fox Willow. Lovely!

 

My trotting rod is called the Normark Crusader, which presumably means I should don a crucafix and go and hit muslims with it :rolleyes:

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music
