I have been pretty lucky in much of my fishing, in terms of effort and returns I've been very very lucky for some species. However for one species in particular its been a grueller, perch!

 

I have probably spent more time fishing for perch than any other species, however my pb is relatively modest (compared to many). In previous years I have never travelled around the country in search of bigger fish, instead I prefer to fish my favourite local venues. However, in the last two years I've travelled a little further in an effort to get amongst some really big perch, however I've not managed one! Don't get me wrong I catch plenty of perch and I don't mind that the biggies are avoiding me, but it is strange how I'm lucky with some species and quite unlucky with others!

 

So what is your 'bogey' species, is there one that avoids you no matter how hard you try?

Tench, Tench, Tench and oh yeah Tench.

 

I do try hard and put a lot of effort in to trying to catch them. I do catch the odd one but not as many as I think I should or the size I would like too catch. My PB is a modest 6 lb 2oz and that was many years ago.

 

However its only been the last few years I have struggled big time with them. I can tie it down to when I first purchased a camera about 5 years ago, before then I never used to have pictures of the fish I caught. Buy a camera and the Tench go all camera shy and refuse to put in an appearance.

 

For Christmas my girlfriend got an album printed of some of the fish I had caught, but I had no decent sized Tench for her to use other then a nice Golden One I caught in the summer. I was so pleased with that fish as it had been a while since I had seen one. I even made a special effort to go out in the autumn and winter to catch one so should could include it in her work but only caught a 2 pounder.

 

And just to rub it in back in Feb while targeting Perch with my girlfriend, half way through the session she announced she was going to catch a Tench. Using all my years of fishing experience I adviced her that it was to early to catch Tench, but she was sure she could catch one and yes she did. Well I am not surprised even I would not take Tench fishing tips from myself :D Plus she caught a good Perch while I spent the day catching Bream after Bream. Which would have be good if I was after them.

Pike!

 

Growing up in Norfolk I was surrounded by rivers, lakes, drains and pits full of pike. For a long time they were my favourite species and I fished for little else. Winter especially was always completely devoted to them. God knows how many I've caught, but I've never had a big one. I've been with friends who have had the biggies and I know they were in the waters I fished, and (of course) I've lost the odd big fish, but surely the law of averages would say that eventually I'd bet a big one?

 

Nope! My PB rose quickly to 18lb and has been stuck there for over 15 years. That was a one-off too, I've had very few pike over about 13lb, and most of those I have had have been on worm while perching :rolleyes:

 

I know that 18lb isn't a tiddler, but it would be really nice to get a 20 one day. These days though I do very little piking, having caught the perch and chub bugs, so it's now even less likely!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

Mine has to be big roach as a teenager i caught a 1lb 2oz fish and thats still my pb after over a quarter of a century. A 2lb fish would be a dream come true. Never had a big rudd either but havnt really tried for those.

everytime i catch a fish i'm lucky when i blank i'm a hopeless angler.

Perch for me too, as hard as I try I just don't seem to be able to catch anything bigger than a 4oz stripey that has invariably swallowed the blinking hook!

 

My last effort at perch fishing netted me a 4lb tench on a lobworm! I think I caught the smallest perch in Wingham when I went there a couple of years ago too!

I appreciate this is the coarse section but as there are many of you who fish british rivers this just about qualifies. The Mullet :angry: I have caught quite a few and even one a cup for best of year but they seem so unpredictable. I have walked up and down the river where I catch them or attempt to catch them and see loads when the tide drops. I fished for them after digging fresh harbour ragworms from the muddy banks to trot using sensitive gear. What makes them tick? for several visits all I can catch is bass and then doing nothing different I catch mullet continuosly for an hour! A challenge of course but a definite bogey fish.
