Strange newspaper report

Vagabond

Recommended Posts

I know you shouldn't believe what you read in newspapers , but.......

(Kent and Sussex Courier)One of the biggest fires to hit the Ashdown Forest in recent memory was caused by a Scout trying to burn toilet paper.........

.......youngster who was attempting to carry out the common practice of burning toilet paper after relieving himself.....

....which is standard practice (according to a Scout Association spokesman)

Call me old fashioned, but I use a trowel, dig a small hole, and bury the evidence - soft-tissue toilet paper will rot down in a few months.

It beggars belief that youngsters are encouraged to burn paper (and how easy is used toilet paper to burn anyway?) in a high fire-risk environment such as a heathland in early spring.

...and by the very nature of "relieving oneself" this act would be unsupervised.

Any comments folks?

We were the same as you Dave, a trowel and bury the evidence when roving.

talking of bog paper ,when you use a motorhome or portable toilette its recommended you use a special quick dissolving bog paper at £3 (or more) for 4 rolls ,we use the basics stuff from a supermarket at 50p for 4 rolls and its breaks down far faster ,not so comfy on the bum but certainly on the pocket :D

not sure bog paper can burn unless its bronco and even then probably will just smoulder especially second hand

If nothing else a trench should have been dug and the paper left to biodegrade.....we NEVER let Scouts or Cubs start a fire without supervision. I feel someione's licence being removed.

I hope they get charged.

This is a signature, there are many signatures like it but this one is mine

Alan, are you speaking as a scout/cub leader? If so, that is reassuring

I don't know how accurate the newspaper report is - but they do quote a Scout Association "spokesman" as condoning the action.

If that quote is true, it raises grave doubts as to whether these are fit persons to be in charge of teaching outdoorsmanship to youngsters.

This is the second case of poor judgement by the SA in recent months.

The first ? Let me refer you to one of the most contrived and unrealistic "adventure" programmes ever to disgrace our TV screens. The "hero" is apparently considered an appropriate role model by the SA.

He should have put it in for recycling. Isn't most toilet paper recycled these days? I know that the toilet paper we buy is always claimed to be recycled but I always wonder just who puts out their used toilet paper for recycling - and who collects it. I put a bagful out one week but it was left and I got a sh!tty note from the garbos telling me just what I should do with it! :o
