Apparently the insurance companies are refusing to pay out for loss of flight time because the erruption is an "act of god".

Not sure how such clauses are worded but with the choice of loosing multi billion dollar airline companies or getting the insurance giants to pay up, it presents the possibility of someone taking the insurance companies to court and getting them to prove the existance of their malevolent god.

Could be interesting.

It would appear that only some are adopting the response you stated most are not. Also under EU law, it is the airlines responsibility to look after their passengers if their flights are messed up.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. In this day and age it seems as though it is ESSENTIAL to have flight and can't do without it. Sounds like a similar debate about mobile phones on another forum. Just how did people survive without these luxuries?? The mind boggles. Have people never heard of bus , train and ship travel? The romans started it all off DECADENCE.

Last I heard buses and trains have trouble crossing bodies of water. It's also pretty much essential to have flight if your stuck thousands of miles away - and there probably aren't enough ships to carry all the stranded people, not to mention how long it would take !

I do find it weird when people harp on about what used to happen before planes etc as if it's relevant. Times change, societies evolve, and reliance on new technologies increase. It's a bit like saying why can't we scrap motor cars and go back to the horse and cart. We can't because billions of people now use and rely on them all.

I see, it's not so much the Silica content, it's the crystals which are formed from the cooling, which in turn can be sucked into jet engines, get reheated and stick to everything.

Got it now!

i heard it was because of the shape of the particles "normal" ones are roundish but these are jagged because they cooled faster i presume because they are jagged they melt at a lower temp in the engines ? or the rough edges on un-melted scrape the engines more ,or both or less or none of the above

Here is a fairly decent google translation of the Finnish on that page.

They talk about melting bits causing overheating problems (blocking proper air flow) and damage to parts possibly leading to total destruction of the engine if it goes on too long.

Funny how they decided to up the amount it takes to damage the engine now and allow the planes to take off again.

Not really, talks have been going on with the engine manufacturers, along with data from test flights for the last 4 or 5 days.

Cant see how thats funny Peter? How is it funny? Is it some kind of conspiracy? Let us know.

Did you see the pictures of the damage to the engines of the military jet? Or did you miss that one?
