what you have to do is use the mussels as scent but strengthen them with bait elastic so they form a much tighter ball or oval then pierce them and rig them. I actually prefer to fish them direct hooked.

I fish a bit with mussels, but I have never even considered a hair rig, among other methods I thread then right on the hook with just the point showing.

Have you tried smoked mussels? Or cooking them a bit? Perhaps (and I have not tried this but recently had it suggested to me) sousing them in vinegar?

I mince mussels up occasionally with bread and make a paste with them, that seems to work pretty well.

Some mixed into a light groundbait, plus some cut up pieces, seems to appeal to the fishes at some venues...Plus they are nice to eat yourself, I like them in sandwiches...hehehe

When using them before I have put them straight on the hook and used a few turns of bait elastic to whip them on.

Try the new Arma Mesh from Fox. It's like pva mesh but doesn't dissolve so, if you tightly wrap the mussel in the mesh, you can hair rig it. See if you can pick up the new free Fox dvd in your tackle shop as it has a chapter on this stuff. Oh and by the way, I don't work for Fox!

You need a bigger hook - a 12 isn't big enough for a big, soft bait like mussels. There's no need to hair rig them. Also, cast gently.

I agree with the others who recommed bait elastic. It is mainly used my sea fishermen to keep soft shell crab on there hooks.

I would also up the hook size, a size 12 is very small for such a bait, try an 8.

I would also recommend using a long shank hook as you will then have a nice shank to whip your bait elastic to.

The last time i used mussels i had this a bit at first so I upped the hook to a size 6 and then just tried to make my cast as fluid as possible to reduce the jerk on the bait when you thrust the rod forward. If you cast smoothly you can still get the distance and the bait will not get torn off by the explosive power of an aggressive cast.
