Supermarket baits for sea fishing?

shrimps ,prawns ,calamari ,mackeral ,other fish are a bit soft to hold on the hook ,a mix of the calamari and mackeral are a good scent trail bait ,prawns etc for sight baits ,a mackeral flapper is good for both as it acts a bit like a spinner on retrieve

best though are worm baits from seaside tackle sellers but the above can bulk up a worm bait as they are not cheap

if u tell your superstore fishmonger u are an angler he will often give u fish they cannot sell at the end of the day cheaper. I get all my Pike baits at half the price of tackle shops

We used to have a similar arrangement with our local Sainsbury's. however not any more, regulations (them again) are in place which prevent them giving away or selling like they used to. Asda have stopped it too. That said one can still get good buys, I bought 8 approx 6" lovely looking, silver shiny sardines for 80-odd pence, compare that with 'baitbox' etc prices, and the only pike I have managed in the last 3 weeks took a supermarket sprat, bought at full price, but still as 'cheap as chips'. Bags of seafood cocktail are ofter on offer, and contain squid, prawns and mussels.

our local sainsburies will happily sell obviously past their best mackerel until an hour before the shop closes then reduce them ,its rare to get a bargain from him and of course if you freeze them for some time they suffer and don't last as long on the hook.

I reckon those blast frozen mackerel are fresher than what the supermarkets sell for human consumption, let alone anything they might be willing to sell off cheap for bait. No problem whole for pike, but cut bait for sea fishing that isn't fresh won't stay on the hook.

Years ago, we used to buy mackerel from supermarkets as sea fishing bait. I wouldn't touch the stuff these days. They simply aren't fresh enough. If you're going to spend all that time, effort and money getting out on the beach, I'd seriously suggest considering spending a couple of quid more on blast-frozen bait, unless you can find a source of properly fresh fish.

 Some of the supermarket stuff is just about OK but certainly not when it's reduced, OK for pot bait maybe but not for fishing.
