I recently purchase a Shakespear Carp Rod (contender) for less than £50. Altought i have not used it as yet im sure it will cope with double figure carp. Remember its not just about the rod but the way you play them. if you give the rod too mush to do it may let you down. I got mine from Kirkgate Anglers in Leeds. :)

Craig,

Suggest you try West Midlands Angling Centre.

They are advertising rod and reel combos for

as little as £19.99 !

Try http://www.wmac.co.uk just had a look myself

and some of the offers are incredible. All the

combos are listed as being Pro Performance

and go up to and over £50.Best of luck.

Craig,

By "handling carp to 25lb" do you mean you are specifically going to target fish this size?

Ask yourself these questions:

Are you fishing venues where most of the carp are around the 10lb bracket?

Do you need to cast a long way? (if you fish carp-pool type fisheries, then I doubt it.)

Do you want to be able to fish for other species with this rod, say tench, or bream on the odd occasion?

If so, then perhaps consider a slightly lighter rod, such as one with 1.5lb test curve - perhaps a stepped-up avon rod, or similar. If you buy an overly-powerful poker-stick rod, and only catch very occasional big fish, then you are less likely to enjoy the fight than you would with the lighter style rod. With care, you will still be able to land a big carp of say 25lb when it comes along!

Another vote for the Shimano Hyperloop, I've got a pair and they are the best rods I've seen for the money. You can get a Hyperloop and an Okuma Baitrunner for around £50 if you shop around. I have been using this set-up for over a season now for both Carp and Pike, and they've been excellent, I can't fault them.
