im going fishing on my local canal for pike whats the objection to keeping one or two 5lb to 10lb fish to take home and eat? why do people say this is wrong and keeping fish such as trout ect ok?

Well, in my experience fish of up to about 7lbs are usually excellent fare. Over that they tend to be a bit 'woolly'.

 

Legally you are allowed to take one fish of under 65cm which, depending on sex, time of year etc. may very between 4-6lb. Probably the optimum edible size.

 

Taking fish to eat is not wrong and, in my opinion is the tastiest fish you'll ever eat. Taking fish to eat in the close season, is illegal. Although close seasons may not exist on canals and other stillwater bodies it is worth remembering that a dirty/unclean fish (just spawned) is likely to be underweight, in bad condition and, consequently will taste like sh1t. Likewise, a fish that is carrying spawn or milt will not be the best eating fish. Regardless of the law on close seasons (which I respect) allowing a fish to spawn means more fish to eat in the future!

 

Wait until the summer, and enjoy a good scrap and a good meal. Pike if prepared properly is a jolly good feed!

Quite an emotive subject for many.

I have taken pike in the UK between 3 and 5 pounds, they taste very nice.

However, that was all about 30 years ago and I have no great desire to do that nowadays.

I did eat pike in Romania once that was the centrepiece of a meal and I would estimate the fish as weighing about 25 pounds.

It was so smothered in sauces I couldn't tell if it tasted "woolly" or not, but the texture was definitely "woolly".

If there is a demand for Pike flesh, is it a species that could be farmed? My initial thoughts is that it does not lend it self to farming. But you could add a few to Carp pools for a few years to tidy up and then remove them for the pot.

Why remove them? Just eat the carp!

be carefull of pike ,they have a habit of biting back ,even after being cooked .just remember too remove all the " Y " bones before eating .

 

by the way pike is loverly in deepfried batter .

The difference between taking pike to eat and taking trout to eat is that the trout, generally, come from a fishery where they are artificially replaced for that very reason.

yes its called theft ,in rivers fish tend to only be owned by the EA (strange that) in canals i'm sure all would have owners ,taking for the pot is no different from pinching fruit from say a garden

ps take them from a river they taste better
