Just to"wet" your apetites.........

Well at last I managed to fit in my first trip to Wingham of this season! Sod the rod and reel repairs and sod being ill I got there! And what a glorious four days of weather we had.

Each morning their was as much mist coming of the water as my first cuppa!

The lake allways looks superb at this time of year with the water clear and the new reed growth just starting to come through the old and dead. Water temperatures (as I can well vouch for!) rising nicely as well.

First "session" trip of the year is allways a pretty casual affair for me and bruv more of a sorting out and proving thing than a hardcore fish hunting trip.Good to make sure we have everything we need in the trailer and a chance to include anything forgot for the later more serious ones!

We chose a swim we were pretty familiar with and all though not in our top few choices for the best fishing a good one to be "sociable" in and to target both bream, for me and tench for Andrew.

Like I said a very relaxed affair with plenty of tackle/gear sorting (why do it at home in such lovely weather?) and most mornings spent catching up with other friends and syndicate members. However one thing I decided to do was to work on my mental hang up with plastic baits! Now for those who know of my carping exploits at Conningbrook it may be a bit of a suprise that I dont have any faith in them! but I assure you for me fishing black beads over 50+ litres of hemp is a long long way from using todays aretificial bait tactics. So a few days using only plastic corn over a couple of handfulls of

the real stuff was what I decided to do. Well on two rods any way!

I placed one rod with worm (and a piece of plastic corn as a "stopper") on the spot I had a big bream from and the other two (one on a neutral bouyancy set up and one on a clssic pop up rig) just out 30m to an area we had marked and were baiting.Unlike the "bream spot" there was no feature and just a steady depth of 10-12'.Both areas were baited with standard tinned corn.

wingham19-132011037.jpg

The rigs on all three were just standard running ledgers with 2 ozs weights and short hook lengths to give a "bolt" effect.Only difference being that a mono hook link (with no hair) on the worm rig and the corn rigs having braided hook links and hairs. Real simple stuff-

wingham19-132011029.jpg

Fist fish was a modest (by Wingham standards) 7 lbr just as it got light the first morning

wingham19-132011050.jpg

As it was so hot during the day there wasn't a great deal happening. Most of the action being night and early morning.

wingham19-132011027.jpg

However I did catch a fish/have a run each morning around 11 which has become quite common on this swim! Andrew was catching much the same. The final fish came late morning as we were packing up and this proved to be my best of the session at 8lb 8ozs-

wingham19-132011058.jpg

So five fish each from 7 to 8 1/2lb each. Not "hauling" but a pleasant way to start the season and even though I saw no sign of bream as all my fish took artificial corn (both neutral and popped up) a start to my gaining a little confidence in the stuff!

I don't often post "catch reports" but thought I would just to wet the appetites of you guys hoping to attend this years fish in and show you what the lake can produce even on a casual trip like this where more time was spent sorting gear, messing about in boats (er and out of them!) and socialising! Hope to see you there soon got to be worth comming even just for the sun sets!.(oh and Peggy's BBQ's!)

Looks like you had a good time Budgie. Some very nice fish there m8, nice pic's n'all :).

Hardcore haulin or casual social I allways have a good time there Ian! I think that's the biggest problem there! Once your there you just cant help relaxing and I often get so relaxed not a lot of effort goes in to the actual fishing. As us hardcore Wingham addicts keep saying "its all about the place not just the big fish or even fishing itself"! Totally daft I know!

Nice report Budgie, thanks for that :) The lake is looking beautiful right now. You're totally right, it's nice to catch big fish but the real magic of Wingham is the spirit of the place, very hard to find these days.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

It's amazing how you Wingham anglers can be so casual about a catch that'd be a session of a lifetime for most of us !!!
