River carp

Anyone targetted river carp before with any success?

A Thames carp has been something I've wanted to catch for quite a few seasons now, but despite a couple of half-hearted attempts I've never given it a proper go. However, while lure fishing last week on a new, very out of the way stretch, I saw one at dusk, and even better it was feeding.

So, given that location is everything, that's a big step forward. I know they can be quite transient, but I'm pretty sure I know why this one was there and I don't think it'll go too far. And I'm hopeful that where there's one, there may be a few more. The one I saw was a decent fish - may have even been a 20. But the size isn't important.

So, my plan is this. Prebait that spot plus another one close by that should also be a good feeding area (to hedge my bets a little), for a few days on the trot with some good quality, air dried boilies (these are drying out now) and tiger nuts. I daren't use pellets or particles or bread because I've also seen plenty of bream, and I don't want to encourage them if I can help it. Also these fairly large, hard baits are probably my best bet to combat the crays and other small fish.

Bait will be the nuts and boilies on a simple and sturdy running rig and backlead to keep the line out of the way of any boats.

Nice to have a new challenge :)

I've never done much river carping, but it sounds like a nice challenge.

I will be interested to hear how you get on with this and would be a good thread to keep going with updates like your Chub campaign.

Good luck.

Stephen

I thought you where one of the anti carp anglers Andrew. I'm surprised your even thinking of targetting them. I'm genuinely surprised not pickin at you m8.

No, I like carp and really like fishing for them - it's the whole carp scene I can't stand. If every lake had a handful in and weren't overflowing with loud anglers 24/7 I'd still do a fair bit of carp fishing.

I like to fish for them in a certain way which is hard to do these days. I need space and peace and only do short sessions, either fishing prebaited spots or stalking. So stumbling across one on a secluded bit of river is quite exciting. I did something similar on a bit of the little river Wey a few years ago, and ended up catching quite a few, it was fantastic.

Yup, but with no success. I missed with my first shot, and the string on my bow broke before I could take a second shot. :(

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I also love catching them especially in lower density waters and rivers. I actually find catching carp as much fun as catching any species and the fight they give is on a parr with most of the best. :)

There are quite a few carp in my local river finding them is normally the difficult bit, lucky you, I would recommend spreading the bait over a 30 yard area to start of with in a lose fashion say throw them in buy hand if you can to get a good spread. Do this for a week or so to get the fish actively searching for the bait and in time reduce the size of the area to were you would put your bait and concentrate your feed there. I have seen carp mop up baits without a care in the world right at my feet when they have a bit of confidence in the bait, but introduce a new bait in the mix a they would steer well clear of it. Make sure your gear is well up to the task I thought that the fish would be rig shy but they weren’t and I got out muscled with a few times until I upped the gear. River carp are a different beast from there commercial brethren be in for a good fight. Rig wise a used a simple as possible but I did critically balance the baits. I feed check peas and boiles over a period of weeks.
