Should we have a ban on Summer Pike fishing?

Of course this is going to put backs up. It can be viewed as some anglers saying, 'we can go fishing, but you can't'..seriously it feels like that, here one may pike fish in winter and if skilful/knowledgeable/lucky enough catch sometimes. However I don't know anyone who would fish here only in winter, I don't believe it would be worth buying the tackle or taking out a permit.

 

'Anglers are quite sure that fish are harmed by being caught' is how some would see this and it can't be helpful for angling.

For it's worth I am not calling for restrictions on when anglers should be allowed to fish for Pike and our freinds in the north might be interested to know that down here in the south many clubs and venues do in fact set a predator season for what ever reason. I would hate to see your fishing effected by such restrictions as even threads concerning some anglers looking forward to starting some Piking around October are normaly greated by an attack that it is not Pike season, blah, blah, blah.

 

Well anyway enjoy your Pike fishing when ever you choose to fish for them.

When I use the terms 'pike season', 'chub season', 'perch season', etc. all it means is the time of year when I fish for those species. It's not trying to force restrictions on anyone else. If I lived elsewhere, the times of year would change to suit the term.

 

When I lived in Norfolk, 'pike season' started in October and ended in March. Now, October to Christmas is 'perch season', and January to March is 'chub season'. 'Tench season' used to be 16 June to as long as I could keep catching them, now it is from April to mid-June. July to September/October was always my 'carp season', but in recent years it has been my 'bream season'.

 

People can fish for whatever they like, whenever they like as far as I'm concerned, so long as they're not causing any harm, and call it whatever they like! If they are causing harm, it's the angler that needs help, not more blanket restrictions added to an increasingly legislated pastime.

I think thats very discriminatory against colour blind anglers.

 

I think the packaging should be improved to clearly state the colour so those that suffer can clearly see what other anglers are using and buying and the boilies should be marked accordingly.

Very true but what would we discuss if you could all clearly know and agree what colour the boilies are?

PS head's up lads - I've seen an advance copy of next week's 'Carp Advertiser' magazine, and next week they will prefer yellow boilies. There's an order line number in the mag, get some in quick or else you won't BAG UP.

I'm glad nobody's suggesting a ban, (although the thread title suggests different), we have too many stupid rules as it is.

 

Oh, and the colour of my 'boilies', are only of interest to me, my doctor, and the wife.

I do regret using the word ban in the title of the thread, not that it really matters as we have plenty of wannabe moderators who can decide what we should and should not talk about

Especially the last three Winters when the big lakes were frozen over for several weeks and the gales of this year coinciding with your free time.

 

Out of interest , do you know of anyone locally who regularly catches perch between October & March in the lakes

I appreciate your own views, and am aware of the restrictions on private venues in other areas. Can't say whether I agree with them or not because I don't know the facts behind them.

I agree with your last comment completely. and you bring attention to the difference in coarse angling across the UK. For instance most of the Norfolk species you mention are not readily available to us up here, there are no coarse fish rivers to speak of , and although the lakes are teeming with perch in summer when a live minnow used to sort the bigger ones out, but due to our bait restrictions this is no longer possible also they seem to shoal up and disappear after October.

For instance most of the Norfolk species you mention are not readily available to us up here, there are no coarse fish rivers to speak of , and although the lakes are teeming with perch in summer when a live minnow used to sort the bigger ones out, but due to our bait restrictions this is no longer possible also they seem to shoal up and disappear after October.

 

If livebaits are banned and you have access to a boat, why not try drop-shotting? I bet that would sort those perch out.

 

I think we all understand that what you fish for and when you fish for them is largely dictated by where you live, and how far you're prepared to travel.
