your favorite hooks

I just did a stocktake on my hook box this morning. Boy was I low. I went to my very good local tackle shop with a list. It is frequented mainly by more than capable matchmen who are quite demanding as to what they want. He stocks a great selection but that works against you in that, what I bought last year, and began to get on with, he phases them out and gets what they demand this year :(. I am a big fan of round bend hooks (caster man you see)and over the past 30 years plus of using them I marvel how hooks just get better and better. I came away with 11 packets of mainly Middy carp busters. High carbon barbless specimen match. They are all you want for catching roach, rudd, bream etc. because they are not over heavy and when the carp or big tench arrive, they'll manage. I just hope he sodding well keeps selling them or I'll be trying yet another brand/pattern :P .

Another thing I've altered on the hook front, is storing them. I bought a plastic/magnetic hookbox like we all did and just as I said above, I've got patterns of hooks in that box which I haven't got a clue what they are, 'cos I can't buy them any more. Now I keep them in the original packets with pole elastic banding them together. One bundle barbed and the other bundle barbless, the I know EXACTLY what they are :D .

How's this for an Idea. When you buy line for making pole rigs/hooklengths that stays in your box forever! before it goes into your box write the purches date on the spool with a permament marker. I've still got lines in my box that I know are eight years old, but at least I know.

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow - creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

I'll go along with the Raptors too in the bigger sizes. Otherwise it's Super Specialists for me.

I use the Kamasan animal hooks for most of my fishing other than canal fishng. 1 they r gr8 hooks all round and 2 they r strong enough to handle those big bonus fish that you occasionally catch. But when fishing canals or anything else you cant go wrong with preston hooks which come in different shapes.

prestons do an eyed barbless, which may or may not be called the PR27, its the sharpest strongest hook of its kind i've found. i'll try and find an empty pack to confirm the model number, i wouldnt have to do that if i hadnt put all my hooks in a hook box

Oh Jesus,

I have loads of different faveroite hooks,

For general fishing I dont think you can beat the Kamasan B520, if I could only ever use one hook again it would be the B520. Light hook but with a bit of extra strength for them bonus fish.

For feeder fishing (except when fishing for barbel and chub) you really cannot beat the drennan carbon feeders in all sizes. I would never be without a large selection of these in my box, I genuinely belive they put more fish on the bank when feeder fishing, esp good for bream.

On the pole for general use drennan fine mactches, for really difficult days drennan fine Pole hooks are used.

For big fish I am now using some wierd make cant remember their name, the hooks come in quite a large plastic packet with 20 or so in, the type of packet that you normally get ten hooks in but bigger, ther is a picture of a fishing secene on the bit of cars I think.

Colmic hooks are good for big fish as well.

God I could go on and on,

I think I have more different sorts of hooks for different situations that all the other anglers i know put together, I think I must have a hook fetish!!
