Magazines

I don't know about everyone else, but this year I won' be asking for a subscription to IYCF for christmas, or any other fishing magazine that is. For the last 3 years i've been getting IYCF but on recieving this months issue in the post it confirmed to me this is the last year.

It's way too repetitive, it's always the same old articles just in a slightly different way, and theres too many adverts. There is only so many times you can be told the correct way to make a method feeder mix (in 5 different articles they show you how to make a method feeder mix this month), to fish a snake lake or to fish with the new pellet or groundbait. Too many adverts and product placements also; near enough every article is selling a groundbait, pellet, boilie, bait, rod, reel, item of clothing, feeder, hook or flavouring.

It comes a point when you're just not learning anything from it anymore, which i'm not. It may be because i'm not as enthusiastic for fishing as I was when i first subscribed, but I still feel it's gone downhill.

I haven't bought AM for a few weeks either, although that is admittedly better than IYCF.

Anybody else not subscribing to a magazine this christmas??

Dave

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

I reached the same conclusion as you many years ago.

I think that I only bought about two angling magazines this year and that was because there was actually more than one article of any interest to me.

I would rather spend my money on a good angling book than re-read the same old gumph over and over again.

However there are still thousands of less experienced anglers out there who do need this info and haven’t read it all before; but like you; it’s no longer interesting to me either I am afraid.

Bring back the old Creel magazine …lol.

You're preaching to the converted here mate!

Coarse Angling Today might be of more interest to you - have a look at a copy and see what you think. It's a bit more 'specialist' and covers all the different species at the right times of the year, and is the best one left now I reckon. I get a copy occasionally.

I'd love to have a monthly magazine that was varied, interesting, well written and without the endless plugging of products by sponsered anglers (the ruination of quality writing and thinking), but such a thing doesn't exist. CAT is the closest I can find.

Dave, instead of a magazine subscription this xmas, get a copy of this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/STILL-WATER-ANGLIN...8606&sr=8-5

And this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chasing-Dreams-obs...675&sr=1-14

I'm tempted to drop hints for a subscription to Pike & Predator and thats because more and more my fishing is drifting that way and I have always enjoyed reading the articles. Still has a number of adverts but overall the articles do not seem so designed to push new products.

I still think IYCF is a decent read for new anglers especially if they will be fishing commercial waters. I always find the Autumn/Winter IYCF issues more interesting then the rest of the year as the articles are slightly more mixed up with some Perch, Chub & Pike stuff the rest of the year tends to be pushing the new pellet/feeder or groundbait while Skimmer/Carp bashing on a commercial

I am actually in the process of cancelling my subscription to IYCF as it is just soooooo boring and free from interesting articles. I just cannot bare to have anymore carp articles pushed down my throat. Luckily the people at great magazines made a real mess of getting my free gift to me so I have never paid a penny for it and it was still due to be free until january 2012 but despite it not costing me anything I would rather just not bother reading it. Everynow and then there was a decent article on barbel or chub but not enough to make we want to ever pick it up again. Shame really.

I agree totally with your sentiments on this book, but for anyone interested DO NOT GO THE AMAZON ROUTE!!! :D

Just had a look on there, and apart from having no stock, they also want twenty quid for the book when they do!

It's well worth the £19.95 asking price ... but is available via a dealer on Ebay for less than SIX quid, including postage, AND he has plenty of copies available! :D

Ever tried locating DECENT fishing books in your local library?

I've got access to FOUR major city libraries within 15 minutes of where I live, and even after pulling apart their online catalogues via searches I managed to eventually find about 4 that were recent and topical! Mostly, it's either fly-fishing stuff, sea fishing, or generic 'Complete Guide to .... ' type of stuff.

There was APPARENTLY a lot of good, older stuff available via the respective 'County Reserves' ... Walker, BB, Yates etc ... without exception, even though the books were showing as being available and apparently sat on a shelf, they had invariably vanished into thin air when librarians tried to find them!:D

Despite being very critical of angling publications I have to admit that Dave has kind of sussed it out. The longer you fish/subscribe to a mag the more you learn so its inevitable that you eventually out grow them...............

Only problem Ive found is after a while you stop having them regularly you tend to miss out/fall behind on new things! It would seem the simple answer would be once you tire of them just to buy them once every now and again but of course you don't know what ones will have any new stuff of worth in them! I used to "browse" in Tesco's to see before I brought but now I find the Internet keeps me up to date with anything new.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
