not only have i been appalled by similar deaths ,in one incident a dead robin that had been hand tame i found dead caught on line which was 1 foot of the ground and easily within reach! another was a duck i had to wade out to rescue that had line verging on sea fishing line around it ,unfortunatey it was wet to the skin and just its head above water and it died back home .

 

now some things are accidental a stray bat hitting your line or a squall from Madagascar coming in but if you lose line you make an effort to get it back.

unfortunately silly old bailiffs dont walk around with special tools and when we eventually borrow one from head office its usually to high to reach ,by the time the tree chap gets around to the pond it may have been up there months

i blame modern rods all i hear is the swish of seemingly shorter and shorter rods trying to get a float to where i can under arm with ease with my fibreglass one ,some line goes through the tops of several trees ,i cannot see how they can do it even accidentally i couldn't if i purposely tried!

This thread also raises the issue of fishing the same strength line all the way through to the hook. I know it's a very popular method, cut down on knots, weak points etc but if it snags and you have to pull for a break it can and I think it does cause the line to break at any point. I might be a little old fashioned in the fact that I was taught to use a lighter hook length and so if I loose tackle it is generaly a short hook length and not huge lengths of loose line.

 

I am no longer surprised when I pull in huge lengths of other peoples lines. How do they loose so much line and tackle from the line giving way and not just the hook length? The big watch words these days are safe rigs that are suppossed to drop the lead but fishing in a methos that does not involve loosing loads of line does not seem to come in to many anglers minds. I seem to remember plenty of threads before of people asking why do they get crack offs when casting.

no it was naturally recycled by the local fox who collects tit bits from over our fence ,or we have a hermit somewhere no it sounds like a fox! he must had thought it was his birthday

it actually never entered my mind despite eating his kith and kin over the years ,it was a young one with its main flight feathers still in quill ,still i counted over 30 this morning on the pond so he wasnt missed at least he knew me rather than cop it from a mink.

by the time i got it home it was the turned back head scenario a classic sign death was on its way ,had i been an hour or so earlier he maybe quarrelling with his own young this year for his sister

About 15yrs ago I rescued an owl trapped in nylon line. The owl and the nylon were wrapped around a chimney on a house. In those days I carried a lock knife kept razor sharp. A few strokes of the knife and the bird was feed. Back on the ground the bird had the rest of the nylon cut away, the bird was handed over to the RSPCA.

 

Now comes the twist the owner of the bird came forward to claim it. Seems he was teaching it to return to him by tying the nylon to a leg then allowing it to fly.

 

As to the cost my info is a few years out of date so no doubt there higher know. Fire Appliance £100 per hour or part of. Fire fighter £50 per hour or part of. Then theres an admin charge and VAT.

 

The Fire Service class this type of call as a special service of which there are 2 types emergency and non emergency. All non emergency calls are normally charged. However emergency special service calls are. Emergency calls are normally life saving ie road accidents, animals in my day werent charged for being thought of as good deeds.

Lazy and Stupid are about the only reason C&R fish die. As Cory says, "there is no such thing as an accident". Are you suggesting C&R fish aren't dying.

 

Stupid and very stupid is why line, trash, bank distruction, etc, is about. Banning cars or anything else rarely cures stupid.
