I had planned to hit the river today for some Piking but noticed that cloud and rain was forecast for Surrey and a temps around 10. Not the ideal time for a OBH Zed but a chance that if you do get one it might be at a good weight. So I packed the cooler box with deads and headed off, on arrival I was a little disappointed that they where having a predator training day and had reserved a whole bank for the day. My bank :D , oh well conditions should be favourable I will just have to fish some new spots.

 

Who ever said these Pike coarse where a good thing? Have they no car parks to hold them in, I certainly do not approve of hands on guidance on the bank. What a rubbish idea :D

 

So I chucked a lead around for a while until I found an interesting spot and decided I would put a bait on that spot for the day and move my other rods around. Things started slow and I had no bites during the morning and worse then that the sun was out :sun: and not much cloud in the sky but around mid day cloud cover started to form and there was even the odd dark one :clap:

 

At around 1.30 my alarm on the rod placed on the feature I had found went off, I struck and met some solid resistance and the clutch started to pay out some line. It felt heavy and I had a feeling I had a Zed and I was pleased when it hit the surface and it came over the net, the last Zed I caught on the Lea got grabbed by a Perch before I could net it. I would love to meet the Perch that could grab this Zander. It looked a right old bruiser of a fish but put a big smile on my face when it went 10lb 1oz my third double of the season.

 

By 2.00pm the rains arrived and it rained almost solidly until I left around 4.30pm, I managed another Zed a low six from the same spot and had 2 little Jacks from the other rods.

 

A good day :D

 

EDIT: It looked like if you go on the predator coarse you get a map, so no need to throw a lead around ;)

Well done Dales. That's a cracking fish.

 

I'm still on the hunt for my first zed and think that a trip to bury hill might be the way to go. Can I ask what kind of feature you were looking for when leading around? Change in depth, change of lake bed or physical structure?

 

Did you get it on the mackeral again?

Nice one Dales. I am deadbaiting after pike tomorrow as well as using the tip rod for bream, roach and perch. Hope I enjoy the same success. Had a lovely fish yesterday on the canal. Pic on my blog. :D

I'm still on the hunt for my first zed and think that a trip to bury hill might be the way to go. Can I ask what kind of feature you were looking for when leading around? Change in depth, change of lake bed or physical structure?

 

I think they are attracted to any structure in the water, so any kind of change in depth is good. My thoughts are that they hole up in and around any structure they can find to see out the day. There are some great over hangs of trees and shrubs and I think some Zander can be found in these sort of spots but I think they must get hammered in these traditional predator looking spots. I have had Zeds from these very good looking Pike spots but they tend to be the smaller ones. I think the older fish wise up a little and avoid the obvious swims.

 

Most of the predator anglers seem to target the margins and it's unusual to see many cast further then 2 rods lengths out. I also think they like areas of debris on the lake bottom as I have caught them in and around old dead weed, snags and lily beds. I am tempted to do a days Carp fishing in the summer just so I can get to see the areas that get covered in lilys as it might be a pointer to places they hold up in come the Autumn. Plus I think I could learn a lot just watching the areas they fish for Carp as they may be fishing to under water structure or maybe they all just cast at the island :D

 

There is a old stream bed that runs through the old lake. This seems to hold a few fish, the more I fish there the more I think you just need to find something anything that is different to the surrounding topography but not so obvious that everyone who sits in the same swim as you will notice. Today the stream did not produce but I found a lump or spot that seemed higher then the surrounding lake bed and the big Zed came in front of it and the smaller one may have been on top of it.

 

I have never had much luck in the margins but a lot of people insist its the place to find them.

 

 

Did you get it on the mackeral again?

 

Don't be silly, who has heard of Zander eating sea baits ;)

Nice report and excellent fish, but the rain? I'm no longer up to the rain. Better to pick on the 10lb zeds than the newbies.

 

I agree, walleye tend to be ambush predators. The only ones I've encountered in the margins is during the summer at the deep edge of the weed line.
