Posh fuel!

The other day it was not until i had put £20 in my tank that i realised it was the more expensive un leaded.

I stopped cursing at what a **** i had been

the standard fuel was £1.38 lite. The posh £1.45 Ltr. It had been put into an empty tank. Well i have to say i was gobsmacked at the fuel economy i thought my dial was getting stuck and the drive was definately smoother.

My mate is a black cab driver and the difference now in standard diesel and the posh stuff is only about 4pence. It is better for their engines too and the black cabbies obviously scrutinise fuel and now the consumption and what you pay is worth more that 4p and it cleans out the crap in their fuel hoses.

Give it a try i really was surprised how economical it is :)

I'm surprised to hear you can even buy petrol with lead. However, if you can then I suspect your autos may be made to need the lead additive to lubricate the valves. If that is the case, you will need to use some non-toxic additive or risk ruining your valves.

If the "posh" diesel is the ultra-low sulfur content fuel then good and no downside I know of except for it being more expensive. Over here, the only other (older formula /w higher sulfur content) diesel you can purchase is for farm equipment such as tractors or combines or similar.

theres still plenty of unhardened valves about here ,probably all english built cars as they tended to sit on their hands until forced to act :D

after lead was banned in the pumps a lead replacement fuel was introduced but i think even thats long gone and owners need to mix their own a bit like the old two strokes do today ,i haven't seen a two stroke oil dispenser on a forecourt for years you tend to mix your own oil or add it to a separate tank which maybe a good idea in old cars ,hmmmmm

i occasionally put some 98 ron petrol in but have never seen any difference in the cars or even the honda90 where you should see a difference :D

its strange all these fuel measures (cats ,low sulphur ,low this low that ,no lead fewer particulates etc) are brought into save the planet at a great cost to the car owner yet a few years later some other excuse is brought in to put the price of having a car up further

You can buy leaded petrol from one, I think, specialist dealer. Those of us with engines that are built for leaded petrol tend to do what chesters mentioned, which is to mix in a lead substitute.

I think Hawk was referring to the fact that most UK forecourts sell two grades of unleaded, one being a higher octane and more likely to contain 'detergent's and such-like.

Newt,

I thought - because of transportation and delivery costs - all gas (petrol) was refined to the 92 octaine standard. The amount of ethanol added at the distribution center varied. The octaine is actually a minimum standard and low - medium and premium gas is all the same stuff now. Just different amounts of ethanol if that. (I do know for sure ethanol cannot be transported through the pipeline system and is/must be added at the terminal.

Also, I don't believe #2 diesel is available either. Nor is #1 diesel. I think it is a single refinery inbetween product. Farm diesel is just regular diesel that red dye has been added to for identification. No taxes on red diesel.

All of the above is BS and that's just what I think. Don't know where I heard that or why I believe that.

Phone

(don't know about England) (our petrol is fast approaching $1.25 a ltr.)

Your going to have to explain the logic behind that one.

Thats odd i just did the same thing myself, pulled into the servo and on the other side of the pump was a ubeaut boat being filled.

I'm admiring the boat when i realise i'm putting premium unleaded instead of unleaded. Put $50 worth in and thought i'll see what happens. It was 10 cents a litre more expensive. $1.55 a litre for unleaded--$1.65 for premium.

Went shopping later and thought to myself, mmm cars running better.

Cheers Fred
