Fishing and electricity

There are reports in the Spanish press today of a 44 year old British man dying electrocuted while fishing at a local lake.

The reports say "his line caught on high tension cables", but that could mean that the power arced from the lines to a pole etc.

There are no details as to whether he was on holiday or a resident, but i know the place well, not 10 minutes from a really good hospital, the ambulance arrived quickly, but apparently could do nothing for him. The reports say the shock blew him into the water.

Poor man and his family and friends. A reminder to stay well away from these lines.

I never knew the power could arc from the cable to the rod/pole. I thought the rod/pole or the line or the rig actually had to touch the line.

A reminder for me not to fish near them, i always believed if you were careful and underhand casted you'd be alright.

Poor bloke.

As famous fisherman John Gierach once said "I used to like fishing because I thought it had some larger significance. Now I like fishing because it's the one thing I can think of that probably doesn't."

@ Dave dave---Pylons and such can arc considerable distances. Electricity is always trying to get to earth the easiest way possible.

First thing I taught my 3 Sons was the dangers of fishing near live cables.

Shocking that a guy so old would allow himself to be in such a situation.

Maybe he had a surge of stupidity, watt? Came down to earth with a bang. The Power that be deciding his fate.....

Lesson for all up and coming Anglers.

I'm going to move this to the fishing section....

It is a real shame, but all of my club books contain warnings about not fishing near power lines; the power lines are also marked on the fishery maps with warnings to stay clear. Where they actually cross a water there are no fishing zones either side of the lines. The pylons themselves usually have warnings on them too, I find it hard to believe that anyone who has regularly fished in the UK has never seen any such warnings.

Dont all new rods and poles have a warning sticker on them? Maybe even by law?

Have to have a look next time I am in an angling shop.

I think they're supposed to but I'm not always sure they do.

It's written in the tiniest writing on my Reactorlites. I can barely read it with glasses on, which defeats the object of putting it there in the first place. Naughty, Maver.
