So modern rigs always give good hook ups eh?

Recommended Posts

While promoting the Eze-Lap Diamond hook sharpeners there's been a lot of talk about "sharp" hooks and their importance.A lot of people dont seem to realise how importyant this is.I should imagine nearly all of us use a self hooking/pricking set up these days? We all think that once a carp has picked up the bait and moved away (enough to hit/move the lead) its ours dont we? thats why we worry about "agressive" hook angles and "anti eject" set ups isnt it? A good hook a good rig and a big lead and if a carp even sniffs our hi-tech "trap" he's ours........or is he? The following film was made by a Canadian mate of mine check it (and his others) out! This is the real deal lads not just a tackle company promotion

{edit note - I fixed the carp video link and removed the posts about it being broken. Newt}

Moral of the story - only well mannered carp (who don't eat with their mouth open) get caught!

:lol: That would appear to be about right Steve! I sent Jarome loads of "named" UK bits to try out and if you look at his other vids you can see that even with these he didnt fair a great deal better! He's going to make one with the hooks touched up with one of my HOOK SHARPENER (I know the results allready just need the video now!)

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Watching that video does give me an idea of how hook-ups on rejection could be hugely improved with a simple terminal tackle substitution, but I think one would probably be lynched if caught trying it...

What's that then Steve? A nice, safe powergum hooklink, or similar?

Trebles used to be standard for US carping. The "common knowledge" was that you could not catch them with a single hook rig.

All,

I agree with Newt. It was indeed common knowledge. BTW in 60 years I bet I haven't seen 3 carp tagged with more than one hook point on a treble. Also, it was a lot more common in the "olden days" to simply cut the hook point off at the "j" with side cutters when possible - push the point through and remove and use a new hook on the next cast.

If you are "on fish" as in that video you'll catch more carp freelining with a VERY SHARP - B I G hook (as pointed out by BUDGIE) and touch ledgering one rod. Use a Texas Whip hook set. (not sure if the right words are "touch ledgering"?? - - - hold your rod and strike at the least suspicion of a bite - like lure fishing.) If you are camping or just drinking tea - throw a line out - place in a rod holder with a bite alarm and see what happens. A fish might catch itself.

As to what BUDGIE is talking about - I NEVER strike twice with the same hook - NEVER. Every hook is examined with a 2X glass before reuse. That's mostly why I freeline. A sharp hook is more important than the fish's participation in the hooking process. Anyone, who does not "touch up" hooks, is shortchanging themselves. Still, most fish you catch are self hooking. Only a few fish set the angler apart from the good angler.

It used to be my motto/sig, "sharp hooks, sharp hooks, sharp hooks" I used to fish with a guy who was (and probably still is) fanatical about sharp hooks. He always outfished every one else.
