All,

Is this University reliable? "Dr Jane Murray in the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science at Bristol University. The University says, "that cats and dogs were owned by 26 per cent and 31 per cent of households, respectively." (2/6/2010)

Here's the URL - http://www.bris.ac.uk/news/2010/6826.html

Wonder why they don't refer to the hysteria on AN?

That is potentially 19.25 million households with cats, some will hae multiple cats, and some will keep them locked in their houses, but it means that there are millions of the things creeping around the UK.

Such hatred over a little thing like cat. I'm not a fan of them, but hey they have a use in life.

A living cat is better than an imaginary animal chum, ;)

Every year an estimated 55 million songbirds are killed by cats in the UK. Poor, harmless moggies, eh? Not exactly - they're ruthless predators which hunt on an instinctual basis whether they're well-fed or not.

trouble is is the greatest number of song birds disappearing is in the countryside ,not just cats but the crow family ,squirrels and those raptors who now seem to be extremely common have to eat something other than frozen chicks from the freezer

i'v see far more birds killed by birds than cats looking out of my window ,what cats get up to looking out other people windows could differ

yes cats eat birds but i walk where there are no cats (never seen any in all the years i have walked there) but there are few birds ,its handy to blame X or Y when the reason is man itself besides his pets. The "countryside" has made huge leaps improving habits but still the numbers fall ,i suggest (like DDT) theres something else besides physical damage that results in bird populations declining

I think Chesters has a valid point Rob, i've seen raptors taking song birds, as with sea gull's, and the crows, ravens. How many song birds are shot and killed by gun toting youths ? I would disagree that cats are killing 55 million songbirds a year mate.

The RSPB says that cats are not affecting the population size of songbirds:

Songbirds are extremely fecund. They produce far more young than the environment can carry. That's their reproductive strategy. A decrease in predation would just lead to an increase in mortality by other means.

"All of the many other mammals that are known to carry TB were largely ignored. Feral cats for example out number badgers in the UK by 3.3 to 1 and have a greater biomass as a species. (Source Yalden ref. 11) They are common on or near farms and are well known to be highly susceptible to bTB as a species, while badgers (as a species) are considered resistant to bTB."
