Fishing with Children (not as bait!)

Hi,

I'm looking for a venue to take my daughters and nephew fishing next spring - their ages are 7, 5 and 3 - so i'm looking for somewhere near the Dorking/Reigate area where i can show them the basics and hopefully they will catch, without disturbing any other anglers?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I can't give a venue, only some helpful hints

With 3 kids you will need help, another friendly fisherman or the wife

Don't try to get them all fishing at once. try 5 minutes each, or swap after each fish

If you find a place that is full of silver fish so much the better. They will enjoy just catching

Take a camera so you can relive it with them back home

Don't attempt to fish yourself, tempting as it may be

Use barbless hooks as they are safer with kids, who will hook them anywhere

Don't plan for more than a couple of hours, or whenever their attention span wanders

Good Luck

Been there, done it :D

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

You could try Milton Lake at Bury Hill, lots of silver fish to catch. Plus it has a cafe, tackle shop and good toilet facilities on site and lots of birds, squirrels etc to see and feed and an outside chance of seeing the deer and other wildlife.

A little pricey but a nice day out sort of venue, the biggest pit fall is if they see the boats on the old lake then they might be more interested in going for a ride in one of the punts then fishing :D

Might be worth checking out http://www.dorkingas.co.uk/venues.html there's the Mill Pond in Dorking which used to be full of little silver fish, but it might have changed since I was last down there. Took my 2 nephews down there about 8 years since and had lots of fun.

I can't offer any venue advice but i would definitely go with a commercial. Check the match returns and find one with lots of silver fish. Don't go on your own - you cant supervise three kids around water and put maggots on, take fish off, tell the one fishing when to strike and cast the line as well as supervise two other kids all on your lonesome. Oh, and don't expect to fish yourself.

I was out with my nephew (8) on his first fishing session a few weeks back and it was full time job managing just him.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cannot help with venue but would stringly reccommend that you use elasticated whip rod or top end... no tangle , and no casting up a tree. The focus is strongly on regular feeding for the silverfish. Every now and then something stronger will arrive, but the noise will put em off. I was told that i had "more than a full time job" when I used to take 5 fishing.

surreyangler, great that you're teaching the next generation, hope that you enjoy it.

With kids of the age you mention, please make sure you go one-on-one. Do not try to supervise more than one kiddy as it's potentially very dangerous as well as frustrating! They'll be in the water before you realise it whilst you're overseeing baiting up or unhooking.

Make sure you take piccies though, their first catch is a priceless moment.

Have fun, be patient! :)
