What's with this one? Spain allows an American salvage company to recover $500 million in treasure from the sunken Nuestra Senora (1904) then The Culture Ministry of Spain declares the booty a "national treasure" and leaves the salvage company holding a 2.6 million loss.

Are you referring to the (very old) story of the salvage company that tried to steal the gold from the wreck off the coast of southern Spain Phone?

They said they were working on one wreck but actually were working on the treasure ship?

 

I think the treasure hunters ship was the" Endevour or odysea?" without looking it up.

 

I met Mel Fisher years ago, the man who found the gold off Florida on the Spanish ship "Nuestra señora de Atocha"...Nice guy and he gave me some pottery and musket balls from the wreck which i still have.

Just had a quick look (ive got to go out) But it was 17th May 2007 when the treasure company took 17 tons of (mainly silver) coins on a 757 aircraft from Gibraltar to Florida.

They said they were working on a ship called the "Black Swan" off of Portugal....But the coins clearly had the head of the Spanish king of the time on them.

 

Despite years of attempts in the US courts attempting to keep them, the American judges found against the American company every time, and they had to return them at their own cost and pay costs. (Feb 2012)

 

I read recently that at least some of the coins are to be shown in the museum at Cartegena Murcia Spain.

 

There is some stuff from the wreck still held illegally in Gibraltar, they have been asked to return this by the American courts to Spain as it forms part of the stolen cargo.

 

At the moment it has not been returned, so further legal measures may be coming.

unfortunatly the british had a part in this in the first place. The spanish ship was sunk by the nasty british. :)

ooooooo, i can see why the yanks are 'p' eeeed off with that geezer holed up in a london embassy, according to this julian is now on a errrm most wanted list: It wasn’t a fair confrontation, according to leaked documents released by WikiLeaks.

 

London’s Guardian newspaper, one of the news organizations which receive the cables directly from WikiLeaks, reported that U.S. officials offered to help Spain in the court fight over the sunken treasure
