Looking for help on choosing a bivvy please

Hello,

I'm looking for a bivvy but dont really want to spend the absolute earth if I can help it. I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheaper bivvys that were actually worth the money. I know you usually get what you pay for but thought there may be a diamond in the rough somewhere that I havent heard of. I would probably use it now and then on the river for a night session or the rare carp or bream session on a stillwater so it needs to big enough for a bedchair really. Thanks

I've got one of these and love it. Goes up quick, stable, my wideboy bedchair fits (just) and small enough that you don't need a huge swim to set it up, which could be an issue if you are using it on a river!

Mat,

I suppose we are "Americanising" or ex-Pats. Do you insist on a traditional bivvy? The "camping" industry in the States offer a huge range of inexpensive products that serve well as a bivvy.

"camping" tents, especially smaller dome style ones don't fit a UK type bedchair very well, they are designed for sleeping on the floor! There are also quite a few fisheries that insist on "proper" bivvies rather than tents - such as rule 6 here http://www.lutonanglingclub.co.uk/join-us/venue-specific-rules

Or the Force 8 Speed Lite version. I'm in the same position, I want a bivvy for occasional use but also want it to be up to the job. I haven't taken the plunge yet so can't comment on these but it looks ok for £90;

and how to put it up;

Do you need a bivvy, I would go for a brolly system such as:

http://www.jrc-fishing.co.uk/catalogue/bivvies,909/shelter-brollies,911/stealth-brolly-mk2,7194.html

Or search ebay for an original stealth brolly (I have used one for years and can vouch for them) which you could pick up for around 40/50 quid.

Plenty of other brolly system out there as well - some on here use the JRC Dave Lane one.

Different floats for different folks!

Hello,

Thanks for those suggestions. My brother mentioned the JRC Sti and said he had borrowed one from someone on here for a trip to wingham so I had half considered that one but dont know of any similar ones to that that I can look at. I think that would be a good bet as it seems easier to erect too compared to the pram hood style ones. I suppose the most important thing is that it is sturdy and will last. Last thing I want is a leaking bivvy after a few uses. I think my budget would be £200 but that would be including an overwrap. Thanks again.

The TF Gear Force 8 Bivvys are a bit like Marmite, some like them and some hate them but for my pennies worth they are a decent bivvy for a reasonable price. An added bonus is that they do go up very quickly, a major bonus for all weather session anglers. The price in Rusty's link looks a good deal.
