In Praise of Minnows.

I've been reading The Little Book of Little Fishes by Mark Everard over the last fortnight (review on its way soon, Elton!) and happened upon this clip of Mark from Springwatch a couple of years ago....

Thanks for that Chris.

I think that the 'big fish only' thinking that's prevalent today, overlooks the importance of all the different pieces of the 'jigsaw' that makes up a healthy, balanced fishery. Take one piece away, or add a new different piece, and the whole thing is changed. Not always for the better.

Have to agree with Gozzer.

Minnows in particular are a sign of a clean healthy river and I’m always glad to see and catch them. As for sticklebacks, it was the sight of one caught in a net and then gazed at with wonder once transferred to a jam jar, that fifty years ago that kindled my love of fishing. Long may they thrive!

And the gudgeon and the ruffe? On many a day sat on the bank, fishless and gloomily contemplating yet another blank day, how many here haven’t rejoiced at the capture of the humble gonk or daddy ruffe?

thats a great video ,really enjoyed that .i've always loved catching the minnows and tidlers and have sometimes been more proud of catching them than any big barbel or chub i've caught .

I have to admit Ruff and Gudgeon are two of my favourite fish. I have even toyed with the idea of getting an electronic mini scales as I have had a few big ones but no idea of the weights.

I really enjoyed that. I have to admit that on occasion I have been known to do a little hand lining for minnows etc in the rocky margins of rivers as a way of having a little fun. It is something I intend to do with my daughter when she gets old enough. I want her to enjoy the same magical feeling of searching river beds and catching little critters as I had when I was younger.
