Problem with shot

Recommended Posts

Call me old moaner, but today's modern shot doesn't seem to be very usable - I pinch mine on pretty hard between finger and thumb, no wishing to harm the line by pinching too hard (eg with my teeth) but they frequently seem to ping off, either if I try to move them or if they rub up against reeds etc.

Do different makes behave differently in these regards? Have just seen something about Stotz - are they a better option?

Trev....if you cut little sections of pole float rubber, slip them onto your line and then squeeze your shot onto them, you can go quite hard without damaging the line and you can slide the shot up and down fairly easily.

I tend to find modern shot a lot better then the old lead stuff we got years ago.

Trev,

I like the newer shot better. It is slightly larger to achieve the same weight and I don't get lead poisoning or ruin my teeth loading them up. I still chomp them down. I can't remember breaking off at the shot (?). Of course I use much heavier line than you probably use. I use the ones with little offset squiggles in them.

I hate the stuff - it's probably OK for tiddler bashing but with a good fish on it pings off - presumably as the line stretches, very frustrating when you're trotting.

Yep, Dinsmore's shot does that . Anchor is a bit softer, you can pinch it on that much more, and it pings off less often.

A small price to pay for a good fish ? Hmmm, have you checked shot prices recently ? SSG works out at over half a dollar each !

Fortunately, I sometimes fish club lakes early morning before the day shift gets there - find lots of discarded rigs, with plenty

of shot of all sizes attached - the members must be made of money !

Guest I live in hope

Lead shot was better IMO but apparently not good for much else. 'Lead' putty is a good product and won't damage the line, you can anchor it with a small Drennan stop to replace SSG.

dinsmore is what I use and I struggled with a new tin of BB on Saturday...them buggers just wouldn't stay online.

I always bite my shot on once im set to depth; might not be good practice but its always worked for me! LOL!
