Zander are pretty well behaved out of water, they tend to stiffen up and not move - use long nose pliers to remove the hooks and send them back. They also don't have that many teeth, and those they do have are pretty obvious and easy to avoid.

 

Pike are different, always twisting and flapping, loads of tiny sharp little teeth everywhere, sharp abraisive gill rakers, much more of a handful! Plus (usually) physically bigger, so more to deal with.

 

Give me a nice well behaved zander any day :)

I think they had started moving from shallower to deeper water, and so were much more spread out over the depths than the previous session. Still, we had about 20 each and it was great fun as always. The one below was a good handful and worthy of a pic.

Even trickier yesterday! For the first time I can remember, there was not a breath of wind all day long. This makes lure control a doddle, but covering fish very hard indeed. I can see now why people go to the expense of an electric trolling motor if they do a lot of this sort of fishing. I tried various things like a short burst of rowing or a quick blast on the outboard to get a bit of movement, but nothing really worked properly. In the end I had to settle for picking spots based on depth and casting around, jigging the lures back to the boat along the bottom. I scratched out 15 which I'm actually very pleased with in those conditions, and almost all were just nicked by the stinger. I don't think they were really feeding, just nipping at any lure that irritated them. The only ones I had that properly hit the lure were when I was just holding it static under the boat for long periods. I think those ones were hunting, but were in the minority.

So a rather interesting day! Back again on Friday when 10mph winds are forecast, so with a bit of luck vertical jigging and drifting will be back on the cards.

Even the fun and excitement of the car running out of electricity on the way home wasn't enough to spoil the day. I've never known a form of fishing that's so horribly addictive!
