Digital Cameras

The SLR style digitals are a bit pricey and I'm not sure if I gain anything by moving to one. Instead I'm thinking of getting a digital to replace my second camera to take fishing, etc. where you only want to carry a small camera for the odd shot.

That's what I originally did. Now I find myself using the digi most of the time but there are still occasions where the SLR film camera does better. And besides, I got all those lenses and things already. :D

I agree with that. But for fishing I much prefer a digital because I know that I've got a decent pic before returning the fish.

Even before I got my first digital a few years ago I'd already given up my SLR when fishing for a 35mm compact loaded with slide film. Although more versatile the SLR was just so heavy and bulky I sometimes left it in the car - which rather defeats the object, and I took less photos than I should have!

Anyone want to buy a Pentax SLR and a top of the range Olympus compact?

i think an analogue canon eos and a digital one will take the same lenses, (but i may be wrong!) not sure about others, but lens mounts tend to be pretty standard

And a Pentax-ist will take several SLR Pentax lens formats..but I'm not sure what you mean when you say "lens mounts tend to be pretty standard". I may be misunderstanding you here, but the biggest bugbear for me with SLR is that there are so many different lens fittings' formats, deliberately designed so that usually one camera's lenses can't be used on another..if only there were a standardised thread fitting, if only..

sorry, wasn't making myself clear, i meant standard throughout a manufacturers range (either analogue or digital)

you're right, its a complete pain in the backside that canon, nikon etc all use different fittings. the point i was trying to make was that if you have for example a canon film body and some lenses for it, then if you bought a canon digital body the lenses would still fit.
