first time I have seen a lifetime ban, is this the way to go? Seen some pathetic bans given out for far more worse driving offences>

It's not so much a punishment Barry as saving everyone else - there's a fair few around here that shouldn't be driving.

 

No-one ever wants to admit that they're no longer up to it, and consequently there's plenty who are still driving who are no longer capable either physically or mentally.

 

Family members usually know better than any doctor.

she got a life ban for careless driving, yet it appears to be a travesty when someone is given 5 years for death by dangerous driving for example? Should the law be changed for anyone convicted of that offence is given an automatic life driving ban?

The "event" was August 2011 and just now sentenced to the ban. Bet there is a middle to this story.

 

I am "banned" from driving until released by the surgeon (earliest possible date March 20) although, like Ayjay says - I know I'd be fine.

dunno punishment is supposed to also be a deterrent, bet she never drives again for the fear of going to jail. personally I think she has the appropriate sentence for careless driving, that is what she was convicted for. Now if they can only ratchet up the appropriate sentence for dangerous driving..........................

You miss my point. She'd had a stroke and although the unchecked processes of the DVLA allowed her to get back behind the wheel, the judge simply detirmined that she is permanently unfit to drive on the basis of her evident inability to safely control a vehicle.

 

The fact is that she injured people, damaged property and put lives in danger and she will suffer no punative measures whatsoever. No fine, No prison. No community service.

Yes, there is a potentiasl for prison time if she ignors her ban but that doesn't change the fact that she walked away scot free.

It is not uncommon for elderly people who become unfit to drive to lose their licence. Eg;
