Hi guys and girls seen a pic of a golden perch floating around on face book, one of the perch fishing community's post and re attached to this post. Has anybody came across a strain of perch that can have this golden colour ? Flanks are blackish but head and underbelly is gold surprising.

I've not heard of golden perch but goldfish, golden orfe, golden tench, golden rudd and even golden roach all occur, either through selective breeding or as occasional freaks of nature. the trouble nowadays is that Photoshop makes it easier to fake photos!

I thought this was going to be an Aussie golden perch (great fish and good eating) but it's just a European perch with unusual colouring. I've had them from purple to washed out grey but not seen one quite that colour. Nothing unusual about the golden colour variation in fish though and as others have said, there are lots of cyprinids that are bred with it deliberately. There are even golden trout bred to that fluff chuckers can see them more easily.

You're going to have a hard time searching for more details though because both golden perch and yellow perch are species names.

Disgusting fish handleing BTW. Perch aren't bass. Don't hold them by the lip.

Like Phone and Mark, I've never heard of any perch like this, let alone seen a photo of one. Does the captor say where it was caught? The grip suggests the US or maybe Scandinavia?

I too think it's a made up image, unless it's from a UK 'commercial' and eaten too many Koi!

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I have seen some washed out Perch with very little colour or pattern but not one I would call golden but I do remember seeing a golden Zander in the rags a few years ago. Very odd looking Zed but that certainly had the colouration to be described as Golden, so see no reason why one of these odd freaks could not turn up in Perch.

The page was for uk anglers so am probably guessing the guy was a foreigner from Europe, no mention on where it was caught as the guy wanted to keep the location to himself as that wasn't the only one he seen in the water apparently. But what was said was that it wasn't on a commercial if I can remember. Wouldn't mind catching one that big on my local waters mind

A few years ago I remember posting (on this forum) a couple of pictures of a Golden Barbel which was caught from the Ribble by someone I knew at the time. I will have a look to see if I still have them.

Golden Barbel have also been recorded from the Thames in the past. this rare phenomenon has been recorded in various species but this is the first time I have ever seen it in Perch.
