What Job Would You Do?

ayjay - if you have the space and the inclination, you might enjoy building a Groundhog Kiln and playing around some with it. Old style and very simple kiln that is half or more buried in the ground. Ports along the top that you can open to pour salt or soda in while firing for some really interesting glazing effects.

One main advantage I can see for hobby potters is that you can get a decent size kiln with mostly 'sweat equity' rather than loads of cash to get it done.

I also strongly suspect that you will find others in your area who would want to fire pieces so you could help defray the costs of operating it.

Several articles below and a google search will turn up lots more. If you want, Jan has some photos of a groundhog kiln that is not too far from us.

There's some interesting reading there Newt, thanks for that. But 8000 bricks? :o That's a garage. ;)

I've had a go at Raku, that's perfectly do-able at home, if a bit hairy at times.

I think if I ever have a kiln at home I'll stick with a leccy one.

I thought that was massage! ;)

I work for the Highways Agency, managing a couple of teams dealing with property sales and purchases. Kind of civil servant estate agent...............double whammy! But I work with a good bunch of people, do more hours than I'm paid for but enjoy it. Guess I'm lucky in that.

I think most folks know what I do, (for those that don't, I'm a photographer), I love it, this is what I wanted to do but it took a long time to get there.

I don't mind the long hours as it's a hobby I get paid to do.

I've been to Scrabster... and I want to go back!!!
