Crispy, crunchy, crusty.

What is it that's so universally appealing about any foods with these characteristics?

 

Pork crackling, crispy chicken skin, crusty bread, (a rare beast nowadays), anything fried in batter or deep fried breadcrumb coatings - does anyone not like any of these?

 

Chesters is excused, we already know he he only really likes mashed potato and Spam. ;)

I like the basics lemon curd as well ,far superior to the superior versions ,lime curd is so so

Unfortunately i can now no longer eat any meat at tea time or all hell will break loose with my internals ,fine dinnertime if its cooked then microwaved ,soup for tea is now the routine ,at 30p a can bordering on restaurant fare!

Span and mashed potato

 

A long time ago there was a caff near the Archway (N.London) which I sometimes frequented for a breakfast - it didn't matter what you asked for, the order would be transposed when shouted back to the kitchen.

 

Egg bacon and beans would become bacon egg and beans, if you'd asked for bacon egg and beans the order would probably have been egg beans and bacon.

If it's breakfast, it has to be soft egg and crispy bacon and never, ever the other way around.

If it's breakfast, it has to be soft egg and crispy bacon and never, ever the other way around.

We used to out with a boat crew in Kenya who loved crispy hard-boiled eggs.

 

We would leave at 5 am, with a packed hotel lunch. We never ate them, because as soon as we caught a dorado, (and there were always plenty) the crew would prepare a delicious dorado and vegetable curry on their ancient Primus. One of the world's great recipes........

 

In return we would offer our packed lunches - which always contained lots of hard-boiled eggs. These guys would eat them shell and all !

 

My favourite Charles Dickens villain is Daniel Quilp in "The Old Curiosity Shop" who ate both prawns and hard-boiled eggs with the shells still on - but I hadn't expected to encounter shell crunchers in real life.

It's not just us - my dog is very interested in anything crunchy I am eating. Even if it's something he then looks disgusted at, like a salt and vinegar crisp.

Yeah! My dog just wanted anything you had - didn't have to be edible - bounce a tennis ball - want it - give it to him and bounce another one - want it, and repeat - he could get three in his mouth before he gave up. :blink:

Or put another way,where/when/why did primitive man develop a taste for crunchy things ?

 

What crunchy things appear in nature in an uncooked state? prawns ? birds' eggs ? cockroaches ? nuts ?

 

All modern "crunchy" foods seem to be cooked things, so did discovery/use of fire have to precede a liking for pork crackling ?
