Thinking of treating myself to one of these

You can get a similar thing with decent quality fishfinders. Quite a few people have told me that when jigging for zander at Grafham, they've seen big fish drift up, inspect the lure, and drift away again... I guess the question is, would you prefer to know that information, or not...?

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

For me, yes, for sure.

Me too. To me, that's the equivalent of a carp approaching a floater, taking a look, and swimming off. I'd definitely want to know that had happened.

I can see how it might be useful and interesting and in principle I don't have a problem with using technology in fishing. However, I am getting a little fed up with the obsession to film everything in life. I noticed a few years ago the trend from some people of being unable to do even the most mundane of task with out requiring filming. Go on holiday and it makes no difference where you go or what you do, every second person you run in to will have a Gopro strapped to their heads or chests.

I have yet to see this obsession over take fishing over here but on charters abroad I have seen many others taking boats out all strapped up with cameras. I even run in to 2 anglers last year on the Itchen rather traditionally dressed but "goproed up". I know this is not the same thing and i am certainly not a luddite but not sure I want to see the modern obsession with filming everything cross over in to fishing. But heyho, different strokes for different folks.

Emma if they hadn't caught the pike on a second bait she would have been trailing that lot round and most certainly have got snagged up and died. Good footage but I was holding my breath hoping that was going to be a happy ending!!

One life, live it, love it, fish it!

That's not the fault of the camera though - if it had been a leger weight it would have had the same problem. I'm sure you could rig it safely.

I can see the fascination with seeing the fish up close in their own environment, I too enjoyed the videos that Sharkbyte shot at Wingham. As most of you will know, I'm an avid fish watcher, sometimes to the point where I get so engrossed, I forget to cast a baited hook! That's it though, I wouldn't like to see it as an extension of angling. These things have a habit of becoming the norm' once the ball starts rolling. I can see a time when some entrepreneur, will produce small cheap cameras that will be in the swim whilst fishing. Maybe a commie' where each platform has a docking point for your i pad/tablet/phone to plug into, and you can watch the progress of your swim from several strategically placed cameras. Or if that's a bit too far into the future, then an underwater guide through your swim can be played instead. Too far fetched? Maybe, maybe not, but where would the cut off line be? What would be the point where you would say, "hang on, I'd rather use my own judgement on that"?

For me, it's when using actual footage of my baits, so I could say, 'if I move this back a bit, and that forwards, then I'll hook more'. I like to leave some unknowns, that I have to work out for myself, without a 'step by step' guide to help me on my way to more fish.

While writing this, my mind went back to the thread where we discussed photographing fish. I was thinking it could be used for before and after shots, or an actual look at 'the one that got away', no more dreams, no more guess work, no more mystery, just solid evidence that it was a foul hooked 5lber, not a possible record. I for one would miss that.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

That's why I asked whether it was supposed to replace the weight. I wonder how many people would rig it safely given it costs £120 or so? I'd like to think they'd reason that in the event of a bite off the camera's gone anyway so they may as well make sure the fish can shed it but I doubt many will.

I see this as something which should be used in isolation, even then I reckon the novelty would wear off pretty quickly. Imagine leaving it out for four hours and getting home all excited only to find a pebble obsuring the lens.

If it streamed live pics I'd be the first in the queue.
