Or was it those other Jonahs, Newt & Jan?

Steve - I think we exausted our rain-making powers in the UK since the area we live in has been beyond seriously dry this past year. Rainfall well under half the yearly average.

Very different to Caifornia then! Or have they had a drought until the recent snowstorms?

The sad part of it all is, the bulk of the flooding missed the dams and has just gone out to sea.

When I experienced the wet in 1966, we were swimming in the streets of Cairns, but the force of the water had scoured away moisture holding topsoil, and smashed the farm dams.

So, after the water had run off the tablelands into the sea, the farmers were in a worse position than before the rains came. :(

Unfortunately for Victoria, these latest rains were on the wrong side of the great divide.

Droughts in much of California are a yearly happening Steve along with the resulting wildfires.

We normally get the remains of at least one and often several hurricanes or tropical storms that drop huge amounts of water but none this past year which added to below normal regular rainfall to put us in really sad shape.

When the Burgess brothers and Den visited, our fishing was somewhat restricted due to low water. For instance, the lake that holds the large buffalo that Budgie wanted to try for had all its launch ramps closed. Many other lakes were down so much that fishing was difficult and poor.

An extract from Dorothea Mackellar's classic poem:

I love a sunburnt country,

A land of sweeping plains,

Of ragged mountain ranges,

Of droughts and flooding rains.

I love her far horizons,

I love her jewel-sea,

Her beauty and her terror

The wide brown land for me!

er, Didn't she write that while living in England? ;)

The love of field and coppice

Of green and shaded lanes

of ordered woods and gardens

Is running in your veins

Strong love of grey-blue distance

brown streams and soft dim skies[

This is a still from video of one of the reservoirs we saw in Carolina...

Looks to be down about 40 feet? Considering it stretches for many miles, that is a serious loss of water.

That is a power boat on the surface :)

er, those are the Western colonies Den.

Admittedly they too seem to be suffering some increasingly worrying climate related mini-disasters of late.

It looks like we will at least be getting some rain and wind in a few hours. We are located in the red square and our weather moves west to east due to the jet stream flow. Hopefully the tornados embedded in this narrow and fairly violent storm front will not be in the part that passes over us.
