Elton - it is. I got to handle that rod (in the house) and he does use it on occasion and catch with it. Made by hand by him several years back.

The reel is a genuine Vagapin. :D :D

Funnily enough a couple of the split cane rods that I will inherit are my father's own creations. I find it amazing that it wasn't all that long ago (40 years?) that a fair few anglers made their own rods.

You may remember that last year I asked about getting a rod repaired that my father had made for me. Ok that was made from Carbon fibre blanks but even still I doubt that many anglers now can make up a rod from a blank.

As for the steel rod I've only ever held it once or twice and compared to modern rods it weighs an absolute ton!

Well, I still can, but as I now have more than enough cane rods, I don't build from scratch anymore - However, I still refurbish my own cane and greenheart rods.

As one who in his youth made bushpoles from native woods (Birch, Mountain Ash and Osier) and later used Hickory, Lancewood and Greenheart rods, I find this new-fangled split-cane as light as a feather!

Tell us more (ie make, length etc) about this steel rod, with a picture if possible.

i have a few Apollo steel rods in the loft ,i found them (compared to cheap split cane) light with a good action .

they did rust from the inside but removing the bung and putting a few drops of oil in stopped that ,glueing the bung back in made it water tight.

tank aerials on the other hand were a different story <_<

i have only 1 cane rod a Chapman "The Shelford" my first completely new rod bought from Dawsons? Bromley in approx 1962 ish it lost the top few inches and had a larger bore end eye fitted in an unfortunate tree/float retrieve confrontation :(
